Penguin Press News

The Week of September 30, 2019

Dear LPE Families,

Greetings to our amazing Penguin community!

We are looking forward to seeing all of our track 1, 2, and 3 Penguins tomorrow! Our school staff spent much of today planning in teams and attending professional development sessions. The day was highly collaborative and productive. We appreciate your support of our teachers during these District workdays.

As a reminder, report cards will go home this Friday, October 4th to all track 1, 2, and 3 students. Track 4 report cards will go home on Friday, October 25th. Our students have demonstrated tremendous growth during the first quarter of school. If you have questions about your child's academic or social/emotional progress, please start by contacting his or her teacher. Building a positive partnership is key to the success of all of our students

Being a parent and educator, I have to consider many perspectives, understanding the importance of all viewpoints. Recently, I came across a column in the Washington Post that I found very helpful for parents when considering approaching a teacher with a concern or feedback. Please see the article embedded below my welcome message. I hope it provides you with insight that is helpful!

    • October 4th - Report Cards Tracks 1, 2, 3

    • October 8th - LPE will serve as a Municipal election polling site. All classes will eat in their classrooms. Administrators will be present in the cafeteria throughout the day. Warm lunches will be served for buyers.

What's Going on in Social Thinking?

Social Thinking classes have been working hard on the concept of teamwork and what it takes to make it work. In 2nd through 5th, we have explored the concept of taking different roles so everyone is included, using positive communication and flexible thinking. In K-1, we learned about what a "group plan" is and how to stay in the group. We have also talked about "expected" and "unexpected" which are words to help us describe our feelings when we are with other people. Sometimes we feel calm and everything feels right - that's expected. When we aren't sure how to react or feel uncomfortable or even upset, it might be because someone did something unexpected. Soon we will be learning about the size of a problem and how to be flexible.

Trunk or Treat will be October 26th from 2-4 pm at Laurel Park! This event promotes a fun, safe environment for children and families to trick or treat. Kids can dress up in costume and trick or treat from trunk to trunk in the Laurel Park Elementary School parking lot. Parents, you provide the trunks and the treats for our trick or treaters by parking in the lot and handing out treats from your car trunk! This year we are encouraging alternatives to candy and food so that we can include all students and promote healthy living. Some “treat” ideas are pencils, erasers, stickers, tattoos, small toys, and glow sticks. We will also have games, activities, and voting for the best class pumpkin!

Laurel Park Spring Fun Run Volunteers Needed

We are THRILLED to be hosting our *very own* Laurel Park FUN RUN in March for our students!

We will be using Boosterthon to help organize secure donations but this will allow us to keep more of the gracious donations that we receive during this fundraiser!

With this exciting change, we are looking for a LOT our Penguin Community to volunteer any time to help us organize this event and make it the best year yet for our students and our school!
