NEW: This Week's Message from Mr. Smith
Northwest High School Families,
Happy October! It is hard to believe that this week, interims are being released which means we are half-way through marking period 1. It has been a great start to the year and this past week was an exciting Homecoming week. Each of our athletics teams had great showings with many nail-biting victories. Congrats to our student-athletes! We culminated the week with our homecoming dance and while there a few photos from the event attached below, be sure to check out the SGA's community photo folder linked here. There are many more to see!
Yearbook loves to feature our seniors with their current NWHS siblings!
Do you want your senior to be featured in the yearbook with their sibling(s) that currently attend NWHS?
Please complete this form by tomorrow, Monday, October 2.
This Wednesday, October 4 is National Walk and Roll to School Day. We encourage students, families, and staff to walk and/or bike to school to commemorate this very healthy and safe alternative traveling to school. More information is available at the following website: https://www.walkbiketoschool.org/
This week, we will also begin hall sweeps. While we will start off warning students who are in the hallway after the tardy bell rings, we expect that every student is prioritizing their timely arrival to each class. We have been seeing a growing number of students who are not moving through the hallways as quickly as possible, and as a result there have been a growing number of tardies. After a few weeks of warnings, we will begin assigning detentions to those students who are late. Remember, the point of hall sweeps is to maintain the high level of importance with arriving to class on time, and prioritizing learning leading to high academic achievement.
In this week's newsletter, you can find new and important items such as the upcoming Jaguar Bowl interest meeting, information regarding our upcoming PSAT Day on October 11, information regarding the Seal of Biliteracy Exam, College and Career Updates, a Celebration of Belonging for Hispanic Heritage Month, Things to Know from MCPS for Thursday, September 28, Independent Electrical Contractors' Open House opportunity, Five Guys Class of 2026 Fundraiser, and the athletics and events schedule for the week. Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrations, information for the NW Step Club and information about the Iridescent Dance Team
There are some important reminders including information regarding the NW Step Club, Hispanic Heritage Month information, yearbook information, ways for preschoolers to join our program, information for MCPS' Girls Summit, an opportunity to join the Principals' Advisory Council, a call for free store donations, a note about our upcoming Financial Aid Webinar, parking permit information, ways to join the PTSA and Booster Clubs, a call to support our Booster Club, the new face coverings policy in effect, a call for parents to join our parent councils, parentVue resources, College T-Shirt Tuesdays, and ways to buy Class spirit gear!
We thank you for your continued support and trust. Let's make it a great week!
NEW: PSAT Day is Wednesday, October 11
On Wednesday, October 11th, all 10th grade students and 11th grade students who registered will take the PSAT at Northwest High School. 10th and 11th graders who are taking the PSAT must report at 7:45am for the test. Bus transportation will run at scheduled times in the morning and afternoon, and any 9th, non-testing 11th, or 12th grade student will report to the cafeteria for a study hall.

NEW OPPORTUNITY! Girls in Technology (GIT) is led by a committee of women volunteers who are dedicated to initiating programs to excite, inspire and create awareness for girls interested in Technology.
Our vision is to significantly increase the number of girls who pursue Technology-focused education and ultimately join the ranks of other successful women in Technology careers.
Our mission is to engage and inspire girls in grades 6 through 12 in the D.C. Metro Region, especially underserved girls, to enable them to envision a path for education and career opportunities in Technology. Our programs will offer successful women role models, targeted education, endearing support and affinity. We will hold ourselves accountable to focus on GIT girls-first and foster diversity and inclusion (and belonging).
Mentor Protégé (MP) Program – 13th Year!
The Mentor Protégé (MP) Program connects girls with professional women mentors and like-minded girls for the purpose of identifying pathways to careers in Technology. The program is for girls in grades 9 through 12 and includes five in-person 2-hour sessions. Our sessions offer networking and mentoring opportunities while featuring guest speakers / panelists who share their experiences on topics such as Technology careers. Sessions will be held in person at locations in Tysons Corner, VA and Rockville, MD.
GIT has traditionally offered Technology-focused scholarships for girls in grades 6 through 11, and Higher Education scholarships for girls in the 12th grade. Scholarships are competitively awarded based on application submissions and GIT program engagement. Financial awards are for the pursuit of Technology-focused experiences or to further Technology-related educational opportunities. Historically, GIT has invited two scholarship winners to attend and/or be recognized at the annual WIT Leadership Awards ceremony. Additionally, we provide exciting swag, and high school seniors will be eligible to receive a one-year membership to WIT!
Sessions begin Wednesday, October 18. All session times are 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The Maryland location is Montgomery Community College (51 Mannakee Street, Rockville MD).
