From The Principal
As we mentioned at our back to school night we have assessed our dismissal procedures and feel there can be changes made in order to make it a more secure process. We are currently in the planning phases. We are making behind the scenes changes to the bus dismissal which will have little to no impact on students/parents. Changes will also be made to the car line in order to insure students are dismissed to their appropriate vehicle in a more organized fashion. More information detailing the changes will be sent out soon via email.
As always it is an honor to serve as the principal of Sunflower Elementary!

From The Counselor
Hello Sunflower families! I wanted to let you all know what your student/s are learning about when we are teaching our social/emotional curriculum. The curriculum we use is called Positive Action.
During the end of August & throughout September, all students in K-5 are learning about self-concept. The curriculum is designed to be developmentally appropriate across elementary grades. The students are learning the definition, formation, and importance of self-concept.
You may reinforce with your student/s that self-concept is ³the way you think about yourself.² Students learn that family, friends, and other students influence these feelings, but they also learn that they are each unique and special and in control of their own choices. When they make positive choices and actually do positive actions, they feel good about themselves.
Some of the terminology we are using when discussing self-concept include:
a. Positive Action: to do or cause good things to happen.
b. Self-Concept: how you feel about yourself.
c. Valuable: precious or of great worth.
d. Happiness: to feel good about who you are and what you do.
e. Unique: to be one of a kind.
f. Success: to feel good about who you are and what you do.
Students learn the basic principle that positive thoughts lead to positive feelings and positive feelings lead to positive actions, which in turn lead to further positive thoughts. The positive circle (thoughts - actions - feelings) is the basis for happy, healthy lives. By contrast, negative thoughts begin a circle of negativism that works against happiness.
