PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE - DONNA BURKE
Hello everyone,
Time is flying by this year! I cannot believe we are already at the end of the 1st 9 weeks. The 1st 9 weeks ends on Friday Oct. 8th, and report cards will go home with the students on October 18th. In addition, the Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program (ACAP) scores are being mailed home on Friday, October 8th.
The ACAP was administered for the very first time during the spring of 2021 to students in the areas of language arts, math, and science (6th and 8th grades only). This assessment provides all of us with important information about your student’s learning, which will enable us to determine how your child is progressing in these areas. In addition, it establishes a firm baseline for growth each year as a student progresses through middle school.
Once you receive your scores, you can better understand the information by accessing the information through this link that will be provided in the letter. The information will include an ACAP parent information sheet as well as a short video explaining how to understand your child’s results. If you have questions or concerns about your child’s scores after viewing the video, please feel free to reach out to your student’s counselor, our literacy coach or grade level administrator.
As we move into the 2nd 9 weeks, we are excited to welcome a new 6th grade math teacher. This will be an additional unit that will allow us to have smaller math classes for our 6th graders. This addition will cause some schedule changes, but having smaller math classes will definitely be a plus for our 6th graders. In addition, we may have to make some other changes in other grades to balance our classes.
Thank you for your continued support and GO BUCS!

NEWS FROM MRS. SCHMITH, SCHOOL NURSE
If your child has ANY symptoms of illness, please keep him/her at home until you can determine the cause of the symptoms. If your child has symptoms and they have been tested for COVID-19, they must remain home until the COVID-19 test results are reported to you. Per the ADPH Back to School Guidance, if your child has symptoms and has a negative covid test result, the child should stay home for 10 days UNLESS a healthcare provider issues an alternate diagnosis. We don't need to know the specific diagnosis but we need to know there is a diagnosis other than COVID-19 to explain the symptoms. When students report to school with symptoms of illness and subsequently test positive for COVID-19, they have exposed countless others, creating multiple close contact individuals and additional COVID positive cases. Please refer to the ADPH Back to School Guidance pages numbered 13 and 15, or your personal Healthcare Professional if you have questions. https://www.alabamapublichealth.gov/covid19/assets/cov-school-guidance-073021.pdf

ATTENDANCE INFORMATION
Please email Mrs. Prescott at jprescott@hoover.k12.al.us or call (205) 439-2268 concerning any attendance issues.
A reminder about excuse notes...
*Must be turned in within 3 days of the absence
*Absences are excused for the following reasons:
illness
death in the immediate family
inclement weather
legal quarantine
emergency conditions as determined by the Principal/Designee or Superintendent/Designee
permission of Principal and consent of parent
Remember, a parent excuse should include the following information:
Student Full Name
Grade
Dates & reason of absence(s)
Handwritten Parent Signature
ANTICIPATED ABSENCE FORMS - If it is necessary for your student to be gone from school they must complete an Anticipated Absence Form and turn it in within 3 days of the absence. Forms are also available in the 2nd floor office. There is a section on the form to be completed and signed by the parent, then the student fills in his schedule and obtains the signatures of his teachers, and submits it to the grade level administrator for final approval. Approval is based on the student's grade averages and current attendance record. Please note: if the student only plans to be gone for part of a day, he or she needs to enter the time of checkout, and get the signatures of only the teachers whose classes they will miss. Also, there is no need to obtain signatures from virtual teachers, (although they should be notified by email of the absence). Please be aware that failure to complete this form and turn it in will result in loss of credit for work missed and made up.

All students will have free breakfast and lunch during the 2021-2022 school year. While breakfast and lunch will be free, à la carte items such as extra snacks and beverages must be purchased.
