Super Six
A Literacy Strategy for Reading Comprehension
What does PREDICT mean? (Skill of the day sheet)
Good Readers are always predicting and keep reading to confirm their predictions or answer their questions. Encouraging students to make predictions ensures they are accessing their prior knowledge and encourages them to form their own opinions whilst reading.
WHY IS PREDICTING SO IMPORTANT?
Making predictions is more than just guessing what is going to happen next. Predicting helps students become actively involved in reading and helps to keep their interest level high. Some of the other benefits of teaching students to make predictions are:
- Helps students to ask questions while they are reading
- Encourages students to skim or re-read portions of the story to better understand it or to recall facts about the characters or events
- Provides a way for students to monitor their understanding of the material
As students learn predictions skills, they will more fully comprehend what they have read and will retain the information for longer periods of time.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS TO USE:
•Why do you think this has happened?
•What do you think will happen next?
•What will this be about [headings, pictures]?
•What is this about?
•What do I need to think about?
•What do I already know?
•What do I need to know?
•Where have I seen texts like this before?
•What do I think I am going to be asked about?

What Next? YOU ARE THE EXPERT
In the following session you will be back with your faculty. You are the expert on Prediction
Your faculty will be preparing one or two Stage 4 texts to use with the Super 6 strategies this term. You need to explain Prediction and how it fits into the Super 6. You need to decide with your faculty how to best integrate this aspect and complete the Activity Planner so all teachers are able to use this text to increase student comprehension.
This proforma is designed to help you organise your texts before teaching them to your students. Please complete the planner with all texts that you use and share them with others in your faculty, and include them in your programs for use again next year. Examples will be collected as part of the evidence for our National Partnership goals.
We are here to help
Members of the Learning Assistance team are always available to help if you need further support or direction.
During Semester 2 each of the Learning Assistance team will be directly linked with faculties to help implement the Super 6.
