Eagles! A Story:
A building nearly caught fire in the middle of summer during a drought in a small rural town that could only afford a volunteer fire department. A crowd gathered with arms crossed and tears in their eyes as they watched a dry grass fire quickly approach a house. Everyone in the town knew that the dry wells would make it impossible to put a fire out, and it was just a matter of time before tragedy struck. They knew there was no saving it once the fire reached the house.
The crowd gathered there and saw the Ledbetter family, a large farming family, hanging on the sides of a sizeable panel truck barreling down the road and gaining speed. The Ledbetters comprised "Uncle" Percy, "Aunt" Pat, Ardell, Burnell, Raynell, WL, Lynelle, O'Dell, U'dell, Marcell, Claude, Neugene, and Clovis. The crowd parted just in time to see the truck plow through the field and into the middle of the fire, and all of the Ledbetters jumped off and commenced to stop out and smother the fire with blankets and their loose clothing. Aunt Pat removed her bonnet and directed the children to run and stamp out the fire with such precision and coordination that the Ledbetters put out the fire and saved the house.
The crowd called them heroes, and the whole town passed around a hat and collected money to offer as a reward. When they asked Uncle Percy Ledbetter what he would do with the money, he replied, "The first thing I'm going to do is get the brakes fixed on that truck!"
We make a lot of assumptions about why people do what they do, but there is only one way to know for sure. Asking the children about the decisions they make and their thinking helps both of us to come to a greater understanding of each other. For students, it means being heard and learning about how the world sees them.
Cheers Eagles!

Conceptual Learning + Action = Transfer
After a Catalina brought in many bags, her 1st grade classmates worked together to count the bags. But first, they grouped the individual bags into tens and then grouped 10 tens into 1 hundred. They made a connection to the math base-ten blocks they work with in class and walked away with a better understanding our number representation systems. For days, they were excited about the activity and asked to count more plastic bags. So we need your help... Bring in those plastic bags!
