Message from Brenda

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students

PTA Annual General Meeting

Thanks to the PTA for hosting a lovely social evening last week for the PTA AGM. A special thank you to the PTA committee members who have stood down after supporting the PTA and the school for many years; Jane Walker, Michelle Shepherd and Bart Piestrzynski. Also Christine Meaney who has stepped down from the Chair role after doing an outstanding job in leading our successful PTA team. We welcome Fatema Jangbarwala as our new PTA Chair alongside Co-Chair Jane Madden for the 2018/19 year. Thanks to all of our PTA committee members past and present.

Three Way Conferences

Thanks for booking your appointment. Please come on time for your appointment and don’t forget to bring your child with you if he or she is in Year 3 or above. An e-mail was sent yesterday to anyone who is yet to make an appointment. Please find more information here if you need further clarification.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

Our SEL assembly last week focused on the difference between Tattling and Telling. This is a useful resource to use to discuss these ideas with your child. Below are some helpful characteristics of tattling and telling, to also share with your child.

Sometimes students tattle:

  • to get someone in trouble

  • about a small problem they can handle on their own

  • about something they know was an accident

  • about something that is harmless

  • about something that is unimportant

  • about something that is nothing to do with them

Students should tell (report) when it is:

  • about unexpected behaviour that is being done on purpose

  • about a big problem that you need help from an adult to solve

  • about something that is harmful to you or to others

  • about something that is important

  • to keep others safe

Welcome to New Staff

A warm welcome to Jane Madden who joins the Year 1 teaching team as a part time EA in Paula Lamont’s class (1L). Jane has settled in well and is enjoying her new role.

We also welcome Anna Foote in a new Educational Assistant post within the school. Anna is new to HK and comes with extensive nursing experience. Anna is being trained to be a support person to assist students with social and emotional needs. Anna works in classrooms supporting students and will also assist with friendship programmes, bereavement support and generally helping children to feel safe and happy at school. We are excited about this new role and know it will be of benefit to many children in the school.

As a reminder we also have a trained counsellor who works in the school, Erin Donahue. If you would like your child to see Erin, please contact your child’s teacher, Jennine Harding or one of the Senior Management Team. This service is a part-funded model.

Parent Circles and Learning Walks

We had a very successful session yesterday with approximately 40 parents who attended the workshop followed by visits to classrooms to find out more about how students learn at Glenealy School. For more information about this new initiative click here. Our next session will take place on Wednesday 13th February and the focus will be on Mathematics. More details will follow.

Book Week. The theme this year is 'Languages Matter'.

A mini Book Week will take place from 24th-26th October. This is the week straight after mid-term break. As always, this will culminate in a character parade dress up day. All parents are welcome to attend this event on Friday 26th October at 8.40 am. You might want to use your mid-term break to start discussing possible costumes with your child. Everyone makes a huge effort to be creative and to try to put a homemade touch to the costumes. No pressure!

Book week will also include book-swaps, games and activities, author visits (generously sponsored by the PTA) and lots of other exciting opportunities to celebrate reading. Please note the poster below from the Green Team, promoting Book Swap. Books can be brought in from tomorrow, Thursday 4th October. Thank you!

News from Medical Room

Is your child having problems sleeping? Is it impacting your lives?

This free online webinar maybe useful for parents whose children are experiencing difficulties:

Top Tech Tips

A few weeks ago, the Social Emotional Learning assembly focus was on bullying. As our children's lives become more digital, cyber bullying will obviously be at the forefront of parents and carers’ minds.

Cyber bullying can include

  • Taking or sharing/posting photographs, videos or images of someone without their knowledge or permission

  • Sharing / posting inappropriate messages or images

  • Logging on as someone else or pretending to be someone else

  • Encouraging others to access or post inappropriate content

The biggest indicator that your child may be being a victim of bullying is a change in their technology behaviour, possibly shying away from a computer or being reluctant to online game or being anxious when messages are received.

If you think your child is being targeted, please do not try to engage or contact the other child yourself. Take screen shots, then block the account if possible and inform the school.

Please note that although the school wants to be informed of possible cyber bullying incidents as part of supporting children’s well-being, if the incidents are using social media such as WhatsApp, there are limited steps that we can take.

In fact, recent updates of WhatsApp allow the messages to be deleted which could pose additional problems.
