Selby Star
We are more than half-way through the month of November already and we continue to be so grateful that we can learn together at school each day!
Thank you for continuing to screen your student(s) before school. It is essential that students who are showing any symptoms stay home and follow the directions that are provided on the screener. We all need to work together to stay safe and healthy so that we can continue to be together at school. https://covid-19.ontario.ca/school-screening/
We appreciate your support of our school fundraisers this fall. Please note that Poinsettia orders and McMillans orders will be available for pick up at the school on November 30th from 12-5 pm.
We will be receiving school photo proofs this week and Retakes and Photos for Grade 6-8 will be on November 29th.
Thank you so much for supporting World Sanfillipo Awareness Day on November 16th. The students had so much fun playing dodgeball together and celebrating the inclusive culture at Selby Public School. Shine Bright Selby Stars!
Take care,
Mrs. Jennifer Ramsay and the Selby Staff

November 26th is PINK SHIRT DAY in Support of Bullying Prevention
On November 26th, we are encouraging our school community to WEAR PINK in order to support bullying prevention. At Selby, we are committed to providing a healthy, supportive learning and working environment for our students and staff. We know that students achieve their best when they feel safe, nurtured, welcomed, engaged, respected and included. We are continuing to educate our students about bullying awareness and prevention in order to help them learn how to support themselves and others if bullying occurs. Bullying is defined by the Ministry of Education as “aggressive and typically repeated behavior by a pupil where, (a) the behavior is intended by the pupil to have the effect of, or the pupil ought to know that the behavior would be likely to have the effect of, (i) causing harm, fear or distress to another individual, including physical, psychological, social, or academic harm, harm to the individual’s reputation or harm to the individual’s property, or (ii) creating a negative environment at school for another individual..."). Bullying is very different from conflict which naturally occurs between individuals. Bullying prevention strategies that we have in place at our school include a focus on creating and maintaining a positive school climate through restorative practices, and supporting and celebrating our diversity; Equity and Inclusion Group Meetings; classroom lessons that focus on developing healthy relationships and character, including preventing, recognizing, and responding to bullying; and, clear expectations for behaviour at school.
NOVEMBER IS INDIGENOUS EDUCATION MONTH
This month provides an opportunity for all staff and students to acknowledge and learn more about the histories, cultures, contributions, and perspectives of Indigenous Peoples in Canada. It reflects our commitment to partnering with Indigenous families & communities to create inclusive spaces in our school that integrate and honour Indigenous knowledge and heritage. Click here to find out more about Indigenous Education Month in Limestone.
Indigenous Self-Identification
The Limestone District School Board, like other school boards across Ontario, is inviting students to state voluntarily and confidentially self-identify if they have Indigenous ancestry. Elementary and secondary students with First Nations, Métis and Inuit ancestry can self-identify.
This self-identification is based on any degree of Indigenous ancestry and is not based on whether a member of the family has a status card. The self-identification can be withdrawn at any time. No proof is required.
To self-identify, complete the Standing Proud Self-Identification form and return it to your school.
For more information and FAQs please visit our LDSB website: Indigenous Self-Identification
HINDU HERITAGE MONTH
November is Hindu Heritage Month in Ontario. During this month we have an opportunity to acknowledge the significant contributions of Hindu Canadians in communities across the province and country.
A Message from KFLA Public Health
Student Census 2020 Technical Advisory Group
The Limestone District School Board is seeking members for a Technical Advisory Group (TAG) which will support the next phase of the Student Census project.
The purpose of the TAG is to give advice, opinions and make recommendations in the design of methods for secondary data analysis (e.g., determining disparities and disproportionalities among student outcomes based on identity) and representation of results (e.g., specifically how the information is reported and shared). Most importantly, the purpose of the TAG is to ensure that multiple perspectives are applied to the analysis of Student Census data to minimize the risk of bias.
We are seeking members who are able to offer diverse perspectives and/or lived experience including (but not limited to) anti-Black racism, anti-Indigenous racism, anti-Semitism, Ableism/Disabilities, Homophobia, Transphobia, Islamophobia, and/or Poverty/Classism. Members should have experience in the collection, analysis, and reporting of identity-based data. An understanding of the Anti-Racism Data Standards is an asset. Members will also receive the Fundamentals of OCAP® training. We aim to hold our first meeting in January 2022.
We are accepting online expressions of interest until December 3, 2021 (printable copies are available at the link below). Prior to submitting your statement of interest, please be sure to review the TAG Terms
