GLENDALE ELEMENTARY FEBRUARY NEWS
#FOLLOWYOURDREAMS
HAPPY I LOVE TO READ MONTH!
Dear Families,
The story for this month is: WINGS by Christopher Myers
Are you brave enough to be your true self? Ikarus Jackson is, but it isn't always easy. The people in his neighborhood point at his wings. The kids at school laugh. The teachers call him a distraction. One girl identifies with Ikarus, but she is too shy to speak up for herself, let alone for him. Maybe I should have said something to those mean kids, she thinks, when their taunts send him drifting into the sky.
Inspired by Ikarus's own courage, she sets out in search of him and so begins her own journey of self discovery -- leaving both of them transformed.
"I wanted to create a book that tells kids never to abandon the things that make them different, to be proud of what makes them unique. Every child has their own beauty, their own talents. Ikarus Jackson can fly through the air; I want kids to find their own set of wings and soar with him." -- Christopher Myers
I hope you enjoy it, and always remember to :
Be Safe
Be Responsible
Be Respectful
Take care,
Jennifer Molitor

ATTENDANCE MATTERS
- Policy Highlights
Students are allowed up to 10 total absences a year, or 5 days in a row, due to illness. A doctor’s note must be provided if there are more than 10 illness days.
5 Days vacation are allowed
Five unexcused tardies are equal to 1 day unexcused absence.
Students under 18 years of age who have any combination of 7 unexcused absences will result in a referral to Scott County Human Services for educational neglect.
Classroom teachers will be letting you know if there is a concern via a phone call home. The reason teachers call you about attendance is to inform you of your child's attendance status, and to see if there is anything we can do to support you in getting your child to school. We very much want to partner with you in this and know that making the decision to keep your child home is not an easy one.
If your child has missed 10% or more days in a given time period you will receive a letter in November, January, and April. This letter is informational and meant to keep you up to date as to the status of your child's attendance.
Call the Dean of Students, Lindsay Comstock, at 952-226-0202, if you have any questions or concerns about your child's attendance.
MIDDLE SCHOOL PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT
There will be a Middle School Information Night for parents of current 5th grade students on Wednesday, February 15th at 6:30 p.m. at the Twin Oaks’ Auditorium, 15860 Fish Point Rd. SE, Prior Lake.
Prior to the Middle School Information Night meeting, there will be a brief session for incoming Spanish Immersion families starting at 6 p.m. in the Twin Oaks cafeteria.
All future middle school parents are welcome and encouraged to attend. You will have a chance to learn about middle school structure, student scheduling, ways your child will be supported and given the opportunity to ask questions. If you are not able to attend there will be a link to the recording of the event on the Middle School websites.
In May, when building placement for your child has been determined, the fifth graders will tour their middle school for next year, followed by a parent orientation night at your child’s 6th grade middle school building.
PLANNING FOR OUR FUTURE - PLSAS HOSTS SCHOOL FINANCE MEETING

MEDIA-
Kindergarten and 1st grade-We have continued strengthening our coding skills by playing Kodable. Students are loving using their problem solving skills to guide their Fuzz character through the maze. We have also continued to read the Star of the North nominated picture books each week and will vote on our favorite after we read all 10.
2nd grade-These students have also been enjoying the Star of North read alouds and are excited to vote on their favorite in the coming months. In coding we reviewed the vocabulary Algorithm and Debugging and started working on lessons in Code.org. They are doing awesome with these new challenges in coding!
3rd and 4th grade- These students started their lessons on Code.org and it is impressive to see how far they have come in their coding skills over the years. The lessons get progressively harder and they have shown that they are up for the challenge!
5th grade- These students started their new lessons in Code.org that introduce working with "sprites," which are characters or objects that they can make move, talk and be interactive. Currently they are working on coding an All About Me project that is an interactive poster that expresses who they are in a safe and appropriate way to practice staying safe online.
MUSIC-
In music, kindergarteners have been working on concert songs, and playing Boomwhackers.
1st through 3rd grade have been working hard on their concert songs, and are busy memorizing! 4th grade is starting recorders, and 5th grade has started ukuleles!
PHY ED-
Hello Glendale Families! As usual we have been doing a large variety of activities in Physical Education Class. We did a Scooter Cup Stacking challenge; the students loved it. This activity worked on their core muscles, teamwork and hand eye coordination. We are now moving into our basketball unit. Remember proper tennis shoes.
COLD WEATHER APPAREL
Dressing your child with warm clothes, hats, gloves, snow pants and boots helps students have a fun time in cold, snowy weather. **Students will always go outdoors for recess unless the "feels like" temperature falls below -5 degrees or it is steadily raining. Please help to make sure your child is prepared for outdoor recess each day!
**IMPORTANT: BE SURE TO LABEL YOUR CHILD’S JACKET, MITTENS, HAT, SNOW PANTS, AND BOOTS TO HELP PREVENT THEM FROM GETTING LOST!!
PTC CORNER
As we move into February, spring is right around the corner and we are busy planning the Spring Fling! We will have carnival games, bingo, face painting, food trucks, raffles, a silent auction and more! We will also be seeking many volunteers to make this event a success! If you are interested in helping to plan the event please let me know!
We are bringing back the Eileen’s cookie dough fundraiser in March and are looking for a few volunteers to help: getting order forms out, collecting money, placing orders and arranging for pick up. If you are interested please reach out.
With conferences right around the corner, the PTC will be hosting a dinner for the teachers & staff on Thursday, February 9th. Below is the sign up to help donate items for the dinner! Thanks for considering.
