Principal's Message
Greetings Deer Canyon Families,
We are pushing strong into October! We have so much to celebrate and look forward to as we turn our attention to fall.
Friday wrapped up our first week of full day kindergarten. Our students (and our staff) did a great job of managing the longer school days.
Our next DC dining event is taking place at Best Pizza and Brew on October 18th!
Walk and Roll to School is on Wednesday, October 12th.
On October 20th we invite families to join us for our annual Family Picnic during regular lunch times. The cafeteria will be serving chicken and waffles. Non-student family members may purchase lunch $5.00 payable by check only.
Red Ribbon Week is happening the week of October 24. We will mark our commitment to being drug free with lots of exciting activities during the week, and kick off our week with an Assembly on Friday, October 21st.
The PTA Monster Mash takes place on October 28 starting at 5pm. There will be much fun to be had – stay tuned for more information coming your way soon!
Monday, October 31st marks our Halloween Parade here at school. Friends and family: be sure to join us for this special event – it will begin at 9:10 that morning. Families are invited to line our driveway to watch the parade.
We are looking forward to a fabulous month of festivities and learning! What will your favorite event be this month?
With appreciation,

DCES Directory
Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year at Deer Canyon Elementary School!
For many years, the Deer Canyon PTA has compiled and distributed a directory to help keep families connected and to promote growth of the Deer Canyon school community.
This year, we will be distributing the directory digitally; hopefully making it more useful to our families and reducing costs since no printing will be necessary. If you are new to DCES or if you haven't listed your student information previously, please consider adding your contact information so we can grow our great community.
We will accept submissions until Oct. 7. Click here to fill out the form.

Walk to School With Friends!
Join your Deer Canyon friends in a walking school bus for the day! Sponsored by your PTA and Foundation. Pick a walking school bus stop and arrive a few minutes before the departure time. Students and their families will walk to school together, modeling safe ways of walking on sidewalks near traffic and crossing streets.
Be a Responsible Driver
As a driver, you have the choice to keep pedestrians safe. Over one-fifth (20%) of the 1,233 children killed in traffic crashes were pedestrians (NHTSA, 2016).
Consider these safety tips the next time you drive your student to school:
Arrive early to avoid crowds
Be attentive when driving, your phone can wait
Being late for work or an appointment is not a reason to skip the rules
Look out for pedestrians everywhere, at all times
Use extra caution when driving in hard-to-see conditions, such as bright sun, rain, or fog
Slow down and be prepared to stop when turning or otherwise entering a crosswalk
Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and stop well back from the crosswalk to give other vehicles an opportunity to see the crossing pedestrians so they can stop too
Never pass vehicles stopped at a crosswalk. There may be people crossing you can’t see.
Follow the speed limit, especially around people on the street, in school zones and in neighborhoods where children are present
Be extra cautious when backing up and look for pedestrians

Art Adventures Update
Art docent training was a success! Docents will be meeting with their teachers in the near future to create a plan for their classrooms for the year. Please check out the current list of Art Docents here. If you didn’t sign up, but are interested in being an art docent, please email us at deercanyonart@gmail.com and we will help pair you with a class. There are still some classrooms with only one docent. ALL PARENTS - please reach out to your teacher to connect you with your classroom’s art docents to offer your assistance for a lesson or two (or more). It truly takes a village to put on these art lessons and to help them run smoothly in class. Remember, you don’t have to be an artist to help. Just being a helping hand and having a positive attitude can be extremely helpful. Thank you!

Volunteering at DC
What makes Deer Canyon such a special place are the teachers, staff, and family volunteers.
Volunteering comes in many forms: chaperoning a field trip, attending meetings, helping at class events, serving as a room parent or art docent, or being a chair or committee member for a student or family program. Sometimes it can be an hour a week or an hour a month. Identifying one hour to give back to your student’s school makes a difference.
Volunteers are welcome on campus and in classrooms. New for 2022-2023 is volunteers will not need to turn in a verification of COVID Vaccine or Negative COVID test to the school office in order to volunteer. As always, if someone is not feeling well or has symptoms, they should remain at home.
The volunteer website is up to date with necessary requirements: https://www.powayusd.com/en-US/Community/Volunteer.
It only takes 3 forms to complete and a negative TB test to become a volunteer on campus. Copies of necessary volunteer forms are in the front office. Each school year, volunteers must sign a new Volunteer Code of Conduct and Code of Confidentiality.
Volunteer paperwork can be submitted to Michelle Boeckman (mboeckman@powayusd.com).
Learn more here: https://www.powayusd.com/en-US/Community/Volunteer.
