Office for Schools

Diocese of San Diego – March 2015

Dear Principals and Teachers in the Diocese of San Diego,

Our WCEA accreditation process can seem like a lot of fruitless work if we treat it as just another task that needs to be completed every five years. But if we look at it as a process of continuous self-improvement, then it can actually serve as a tool for improving our schools. Unlike other industries where accreditation serves to only certify whether a company is operating at standard, accreditation in Catholic schools serves to measure a school's process of self-improvement.

At the April 1 meeting for schools (leadership teams) going through accreditation next year, it will benefit our schools (7) who are in their self-study year to share their progress and challenges during this process.

Play Like a Champion Event - Nativity School

How great if all of the coaches in our diocese could go through this training!

Play Like A Champion Today philosophy is the strong foundation needed in our Catholic schools to promote our values in every part of our lives. The training and the philosophy of PLACT gives Catholic schools the opportunity to have their community grow closer to God through the experience of sports teams and playing, to become a person who lives with Christ-like values even in sports.” - Margaret Heveron, Principal, The Nativity School

“Creating a requirement that all coaches at The Nativity School be trained in the Play Like a Champion Today philosophy was a leap of faith. I risked losing volunteers to coach our school teams. Instead the opposite happened. Parent volunteer coaches feel supported and empowered to take on the duties of a team. Coaching as ministry gives our volunteer coaches the tools to lead and teach by example in ways they had never before considered. Parents return to coach season after season.” – Margaret Heveron, Principal, The Nativity School

Diocesan Prayer

Lord, Jesus,

through the intercession of our patron saints,

San Diego and Our Lady of Refuge,

we beg you for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit

upon all of us called to be your disciples

and members of your Church.

Bless us to be obedient servants,

as you were obedient

in loving response to the Father’s love,

and to love one another

as you have first loved us.

Bless us with happy marriages and holy families,

with bishops, religious, deacons and priests

to image your presence among us,

and with dedicated lay people,

both married and single,

to be signs of your love in the world.

Help us to embrace

the mission you have entrusted to us,

in lives of fidelity, holiness and compassion.

San Diego, pray for us.

Our Lady of Refuge, pray for us.
