A Poem For Cold Weather By Mr. Nichols
The leaves turn brown and start to fall
And the weather does turn cold
You’ll need to dress quite warmly
Thus these words you should uphold
You’ll begin to shiver and start to shake
So please put on your coat
Otherwise you’ll see Ms. Bennett
With a cough or the strep-throat
The trees will bend and start to shake
And the winds will howl and gust
Your head and ears will pay the price
Therefore a stocking cap is a must
You’ll blow on your hands because it’s cold
Hence you’ll need some gloves or mittens
If you don’t then you’ll be sorry
‘Cause your hands will get frost-bitten
The snow arrives, you want to play
So bring your snowpants and your boots
Or else you’ll be playing on the blacktop
Listening to your friends’ hollars and hoots
That’s all for now, advice has been given
I hope smart choices you will choose
I would hate to see you stuck inside
Because your recess you did lose.

The following is information from the city of Des Moines regarding snow removal. We would like to remind you that the 59th street area can be quite tricky in the wintertime.
The Department of Public Works is determined to provide residents with improved snow removal. Snow Routes will be plowed when snow accumulations are about 1 inch on roadways. Citywide and Odd/Even Plowing will occur as determined by the Public Works Director based on total accumulation, prevailing conditions and near future forecasts.
All residents need to participate by moving their vehicles off the street during snow removal operations. The City Council has amended Chapter 114 of the Municipal Code regarding citywide snow removal which states: “No parking will be allowed on residential streets during snow removal operations.”
Parking Warnings were issued by the Police Department during the first snow event December 8, 2013. Vehicles parked on the street will receive a $35 fine and may be subject to towing.

Nurse Notes
As the weather starts to get colder and the coats and hats come out, we find an increase in the number of head lice cases at school. ANYONE can get them! Head lice are brownish bugs with wings that like to live in our hair and feed on our scalp. Often found behind ears and neck. Eggs are white looking and are attached to the hair shaft. Lice do not fly, only crawl from place to place. They want to be on us and can live about 48 hours off of our head. Their eggs can live about 10 days. You will notice a lot of itching and scratching from your child. Lice are very much anoying and it can be difficult to get rid of them if families don't follow a treatment plan. First use a lice shampoo and follow directions on the box. Second NIT REMOVAL is key so eggs don't hatch. this can be done with a enclosed comb or actually hand picking the eggs out over a week or two everyday. Next vacuum your furniture and wash bedding, hat, and coat. Continue to check your child on a regular basis! Contact your doctor if there is no improvement. You may need a prescription medication or shampoo to help treat.
Thank You!
