Language Arts
This week is a review week. Students will be taking an end of unit reading assessment along with a review spelling test. Please review all spelling patterns to prepare for the test. In writing, we will not have a new prompt, but will be using completed essays to review introductions, elaboration using detail-generating questions, and conclusions.
Math
This week, students have become familiar with the customary units used to measure in the United States as well as the metric system, which is used throughout the world. Next week we will continue our study of the metric system and solve problems that deal with units of time. Within the metric system, our focus will be on units of capacity, units of mass, and converting measurements within the same system. Analyzing relationships is a crucial process when doing measurement conversions.
Our unit test is scheduled for Tuesday, March 15th, after we return from spring break.
**Please continue to practice multiplication and division facts with your child.
Science and Social Studies
Students will be introduced to the the impact of the Civil War on Texas.
Special attention will be drawn to academic vocabulary such as abolish, amendment, sharecropper, Confederacy, Union and Emancipation Proclamation.
They will examine the effects on American Indian life resulting from changes in Texas, and will gather information about both sides of the buffalo conflict, and then choose one side or the other to support.
Social Studies test is on Friday, 4th of March.
From the Teachers
- Please always send your child with a coat during cold weather. We go outside if the temperature is 40 degrees or above. Also remember to label all of your child's removeable clothing so we may find its owner easily.
- Reading Logs: Skaggs has a new reading program that we would love to encourage your children to participate in. With this reading program, your child will read at home and record the number of minutes that he or she has read each night. At the end of the week, your child can record the number of minutes read for the week on the following web site: http://tinyurl.com/SkaggsReadingLog
- We would like to encourage your child to bring their electronic devices. Electronic devices are being used in all subject areas every day, along with music and art.
- Be a star for our students and write a check to our PTA. See the information below regarding the Skaggs PTA Check Writing Campaign.
