Emily Garcia

East Lee hosted a school-wide Spelling Bee in December with 51 spellers participating. The school bee involved 6 rounds of spelling and vocabulary. The top three spellers were 6th graders Morgan Murry and Bethany Logan and 8th grader Emily Garcia. All three Rockets moved on to participate in the Lee County District Spelling Bee sponsored by Lee County PAGE (Partners for the Advancement of Gifted Education) on February 14, 2015. The Lee County District Spelling Bee included 22 of the county's best spellers. Emily Garcia correctly spelled 'optimistic.' to claim first place in the district bee for the second year in a row. When interviewed by the Sanford Herald Emily said "I was very overwhelmed. I didn't know if I was going to make it to the end,” “I guess I'm speechless.” Emily will now participate in the 2015 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. in May.

SMART Amp

Ms. McLeod- 8th Grade Math Teacher writes:

Lee County Schools has been chosen to participate in a new pilot program for SMART. This program, SMART Amp, will allow teachers to share lessons with their students, flip the classroom, allow students to collaborate in groups or whole class, allow teachers to monitor and control conversations, etc. I attended this workshop on Monday, February 16, and I already know how I want to use this in my class.

Students cannot say they did not write something, because you can tag each person in the conversation. Their initials will appear on everything they said. You can see how much or how little a student has contributed to a conversation. Students can delete or trash something, but only the teacher can empty the trash can.

SMART Amp has many features like the Smart Notebook; however, searching for images, websites and recording seems to be easier. You can do a quick warm up, mid lesson checkup, or ticket out the door, and get instant results without ever having to grade a paper. You can bookmark areas of a presentation to go back to later. You can do a safe search for YouTube videos and upload smart notebook files.

Setting up your class is like setting up a class in Google classroom. You give students a code to join your class and they are enrolled. Students only need to join once and they will have access to all of the class notes for that day. This is great for those days you have a substitute in your room.
