INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE AXEMEN NAME CHANGE ?

This month The Axe Online has an article written by student, Sagarika Sharma. Axemen Name Change and District Survey: The Facts and Student Perspective.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 18 SOCIAL STUDIES PRESENTATIONS: THE AXEMEN NAME CHANGE

Name Change:

  • A complaint was filed with the superintendent’s office regarding South’s team name “The Axemen” being discriminatory as it is gender specific and used to refer to ALL student athletes at South regardless of their gender identification. The petition was signed by over 200 people, many of whom were alumni, parents, students and teachers at the school;

  • There has been discussion of a potential lawsuit against the district for perceived Title IX violations. This does not suggest a lawsuit is eminent.

  • The district office has been working on a Title IX self audit for some time and the results are anticipated soon;

  • A financial impact statement is currently being prepared as part of the decision making process;

  • There will be no vote on the issue as popularity is not the best way to determine issues of equity and inclusion;

  • The principal will make a recommendation to the superintendent by February 7th based on the feedback from the South community as well as a full review of the issue. The recommendation will ultimately be accepted or rejected by the superintendent and ratified by the board of education.

  • Another group of alumni, students, parents, and community members has put forward a petition to retain the name “The Axemen.” This petition has been signed by over 3,000 people, though it is not known how many are directly related to the school

  • Students will have a large part to play in the decision making process despite the lack of a vote. Everyone is encouraged to submit their responses to the survey prompts that can be found online.

  • We invite all students to express their opinions, whether they are in favor or against this change. You can do so by leaving us a note in the comment box in the front office or visiting a polling station next Wednesday before school, during lunch, or after school.

  • Additionally if you wish to share your opinions on this issue there is a student survey. The student survey can be accessed from a variety of locations

  • Student surveys have been sent to all student on their 4j email accounts.

  • Student government Digital flyer that can be accessed from our school website or the flyer posters around the school.

  • The Axe online has an embedded link

  • There will be a community meeting on the evening of January 31st if you are interested in contributing to the discussion

  • If the decision is to form a renaming committee, students will be asked to suggest possible alternatives to the current team name.
