SMS Bulletin 10.27.15
Show Respect-Make a Difference-Set the Bar High
Mission and Vision
With the first quarter coming to an end, I believe it is good practice to reflect a little on the beginning of the school year. I want to thank everyone for the hard work that is required daily to meet the needs of our students and this school. I believe SMS is a great school and I believe that our students are thriving in this environment. I am very pleased with the level of technology integration I am observing in classrooms. Just think how much we have all grown professionally since this time last year with respect to technology integration. Thank you for believing in a growth mindset and that we can all learn new things.
During the second quarter, we will begin our growth mindset lessons. Please see the details below for more information.
Moving forward, I am happy to share that we will be piloting an online 5 Star curriculum with all students. As many of you know, we have around 100 students currently participating in this after school program. The online program fits perfectly into our advisory curriculum. The first season focuses all on Respect which is our first SMS expectation. We will begin on 11/9 with these lessons. I would like all teachers to view the 5 Star teacher training video (linked below). This can be done during read days prior to 11/9.
Check out this link for a few images from our Sparty Party. Kevin did an awesome job organizing this fundraiser and celebration. The students did a great job and had a lot of fun. https://plus.google.com/u/0/

Questions to Move Us Forward
- What is the most effective way to increase students' ownership of the work they do in your class and/or school?
- How do you help students gain a growth mindset who may believe that other kids are inherently smarter or more talented?
- How do we as adults in a school model (or not) a growth mindset for our students?
Advisory will be longer on T/W/TH as we are having class meetings. 6th grade advisory classes will begin Brain Lessons on Wednesday. 7th/8th will be reading most of next week.
*During read days, please ensure all students are reading and not on their Chromebooks. I have walked by many rooms where I see students playing games during read time. If they are reading a book that is online, this is permissible. Please monitor this.
