The Huntsville ISD Dyslexia Buzz
October 2020 - Dyslexia Awareness Month
Huntsville ISD Dyslexia Program
Happy Dyslexia Awareness Month Hornets!! If we haven't had a chance to meet at your campus yet, my name is Sara Williams. I am here to serve your students, you, and your campus in identifying and helping our students with dyslexia and other reading difficulties as your District Dyslexia Specialist. Our district serves close to 300 students identified with dyslexia and/or other related disorders. It is our mission to identify our students as early as possible to help them receive the explicit instruction, interventions, and accommodations necessary to help them succeed. This newsletter will help to serve as a resource for you each month throughout the year in updating you with current dyslexia information and how you can help serve your students best. As always, it's going to be a great year helping BUILD CHAMPIONS!!
Huntsville ISD Dyslexia Intervention Teachers & Staff
We have dyslexia interventionists on each campus that work with our students in providing explicit, systematic instruction to address their needs. These teachers work in conjunction with classroom teachers in making sure our students receive the support needed to help them achieve success. They are also a resource for you if you also have any questions or need assistance in how to best help your students. We will have additional SPED staff that will also be trained this year in how to serve our dyslexic students in the resource setting. We also had the addition of Mr. Andrew Farlow this year as one of our dyslexia evaluation specialists that works closely with assessing students for dyslexia and providing support for teachers. We are very blessed to have such dedicated educators in providing dyslexia support for our students, staff, and parents.

Thank you for the donation!!
Thank you to Mr. Breazeale, who recently donated sets of the Hank Zipzer book series to each of our campus libraries. These books were donated in memory of Mrs. Marnie Breazeale, who loved working with our dyslexic students and was an advocate for all students becoming better readers. There were also extra copies donated that will be given away to campus Principals for teacher drawings during our dyslexia awareness month. The Hank Zipzer series was written by Henry Winkler, a.k.a. "The Fonz" and is based on his own experience as a student with dyslexia. We can't wait to see these books being enjoyed by our students and teachers!! Thank you for the continued support Mr. Breazeale.
