Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) has designated Friday, February 14, 2020, as A Day of Service and Love, in commemoration of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy. It will be a day to give back to the community in honor of the 17 students and staff who were lost and those who were injured.
A Day of Service and Love will be an early release day at BCPS and attendance by students is mandatory. Specific hours will vary by school. With support from hundreds of volunteers, students and staff will take part in activities and service projects at more than 230 school sites across the District, such as creating self-care spaces, landscaping gardens, painting, celebrating our local first responders and feeding families in need. Several projects are funded by Volunteer Florida’s Volunteer Generation Fund program, through the Corporation for National and Community Service. The 2020 Census counts every person living in the United States and the five U.S. territories.
The count is mandated by the Constitution and conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, a nonpartisan government agency. Each home will receive an invitation to respond to a short questionnaire—online, by phone, or by mail. The 2020 Census will be the first time that you will be able to respond to the census online.
Everyone counts.
The goal of this census is to count every living person in the U.S. once, only once, and in the right place. We need your help to make sure everyone in your community gets counted.
Census data are important.
The U.S. Constitution requires a census every 10 years. The results are used to determine the number of seats each state has in Congress, draw boundaries for voting districts, and determine how more than $675 billion in federal funding is spent in communities each year.
Taking part is your civic duty.
Completing the census is required; it is a way to participate in our democracy and say “I count!” Your information is confidential.
Federal law protects your responses.
Your answers can only be used to produce statistics and cannot be used against you by any government agency or court.

Attendance Counts!
Attendance - School Board Policy 5.5: Attendance is important to student success. Broward County Schools has established a “pattern of attendance” to meet state requirements. We are required to count both excused and unexcused absences, along with tardiness and early sign-outs when determining a student’s pattern of non-attendance. A student will have a “pattern of non-attendance” if he or she is absent from school a total of 30 hours (5 days) in any one marking period or 60 hours (10 days) within 90 days. If it is determined by a school that a student has developed “pattern of non-attendance”, sanctions may be imposed. Sanctions may range, for an elementary age student, from having his or her report card withheld if they were in school for less than 25 days in a marking period, to the child’s parent being required to appear in court.
Each time your child is absent you are required to notify the school by telephone (754-323-6802) within 48 hours stating the reason for the absence. If the school is not notified the absence is considered unexcused. After attempted interventions by the school to correct unexcused absences, the Office of the State Attorney will intervene to ensure compliance with the law. We comply with the BTIP process.
Excused absences include: Student illness; Illness of an immediate family member; Death in the family; Religious holidays of student’s specific faith; Required court appearance or subpoena by a law enforcement agency; Important public functions/conferences, State/national competitions; Scheduled doctor or dentist appointment; Communicable disease or infestation which can be transmitted.

Happy February Everyone,
It's hard to believe that half of the school year has come and gone.
As you know, we have been learning and applying new concepts in all academic subjects. February marks the beginning of the third marking period and our instruction brings many exciting and continued opportunities for growing emotionally and learning new curricula.
Here's what will be happening in our classrooms:
ELA- Your child will be introduced to a variety of texts including poetry. Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of characters in a story and their view points and problem and solution within a text.
Mathematics- Students will be working on understanding measurement and data.
Science- Students will be learning about and understanding the functions of human body parts (lungs, heart, stomach, muscles and skeleton) and the life cycles of plants and animals.
Important Information: Please remember to have your child go on IReady Reading and Mathematics as much as possible. Please remember to make sure all homework is completed.
Again, thank you for all you do!
The Second Grade Team
As always, we appreciate your support in and out of the school environment.
3rd Grade
The third quarter has been a very busy one for our third graders. We are diligently working as we get ready to take the Florida Standards Assessment test (FSA). In ELA, we have covered almost all the standards. We are currently working on Integration of Knowledge and Ideas in Informational Text. With this unit, students are learning how to use maps and pictures in a text to help them understand the text. Students should also be able to describe the way sentences and paragraphs use cause and effect, sequence, comparisons. In math, students are learning how to compare fractions and identified equivalent fractions. Please continue to encourage students to use online resources such as i-Ready Reading and Math.
The third-grade team would like to thank you for all your continued support as we partner together for student success.
4th Grade
As we continue to implement rigorous standard-based instructions to meet the 4th grade expectations, our students are working nonstop to improve their writing skills in both Opinion and Informative essays to prepare for the first part of the FSA ELA assessment which is Writing. The assessment date is scheduled for April 2, 2020. Your child should be able to write a well-developed four to five paragraph essay. This month in math, students will be learning how to Add and Subtract Mixed Fractions, Multiply a Whole Number by a Fraction, Add Fractions with Denominators of 10 and 100, Understand Decimals, and Comparing Decimals. In Reading, students will focusing on comparing Point of view, elements of poetry and plays, comparing poems, play, and prose. Please remember to check your child's Agendas daily.
Remember PARENT + TEACHER = SUCCESSFUL STUDENT!!!!!!! The Fourth Grade Team thanks you for all that you do!
5th Grade
It's CRUNCHTIME in 5th grade! We are working hard to prepare for Florida Standards Assessment (FSA). We have taken the Broward Standards Assessments (BSA) and are looking at students’ strengths and weakness on each standard in order to determine the instructional path needed to ensure every student with success.
An important part of getting ready for the FSA is having your child complete the required minimum of 45 minutes a week per subject on iReady. Many teachers will be using iReady to set up differentiated lessons specific to the needs of your child and closely monitoring his/her progress in those lesson.
Fifth graders will be taking the Writing portion of the FSA-ELA test on April 2, 2019. Please review your child's writing and encourage them to put forth their maximum effort. Fifth grade students will also be taking FSA Reading, FSA Math and FSA Science later this year. Writing scores are combined with Reading scores to make the FSA-ELA score so it is important for every student to do their best. Fifth grade FSA scores are very important to your child as they are routinely used for student class placements in middle school. We are committed to student achievement and encourage you to continue to be involved with your child's academic progress. Please make sure students are completing their homework nightly. Research shows that homework has is an essential component in the learning process. Parents are an important piece of the academic process and we thank you for your dedication and support to help every student achieve their highest potential.
Lastly, parents keep in mind that our upcoming field trip to JA Biztown is Tuesday, February 4th. Also, the 1st installment period for the fifth-grade end of year field trip scheduled for Friday, May 22 to Universal Islands of Adventure has closed. However, the 2nd installment period is as follows:
