Note from the Principal

November 2018

A Huge Thank You!!

Thank you so much to all our wonderful Arbor families for making Trunk or Treat and Fall Carnival a huge success! I appreciate all the support to make these events fun and memorable for our students!

Also, thank you for your support for our fall fundraiser. We are still calculating our total and will have it for you soon. Products and prizes will be in around Thanksgiving time.

Thanksgiving Break

We will have a full day of school on Wednesday, 11/21, and then have 11/22 and 11/23 off to enjoy the holiday. Student may wear non-uniform on Wednesday, 11/21.

Paraprofessional Support in Classrooms

Over the last few years you might have noticed that we are using paraprofessionals in the classrooms instead of certified associate teachers. Due to the teacher shortage and to meet the needs of all our students, we are phasing away from paraprofessionals in some of our large classrooms. This school year we have 5 returning paraprofessionals on the Arbor staff. They will now be utilized in ALL classrooms. ALL of our paras will push into ALL of our classrooms and be working with small groups of students during literacy instruction time. Our K-3 classrooms will have two para support along with the teacher during literacy time. The paras will also be visiting EVERY classroom again in the afternoon to offer math support. Mrs. McKenney will be also working with our students who are in need of more support in literacy and math. This new system will utilize our support staff to maximize the learning of all our students. We are excited about this new type of support we can offer our students and can't wait to see all the student academic gains and growth.

Colder Weather and School Closings

As our Michigan weather gets colder please see that your children have appropriate outerwear for recess and any other outside activities. We ask that you send your child to school with appropriate head, hand, and foot wear along with snow pants (when the temp reaches 30 degrees). We will take our students out for recess unless the temperature is at 10 degrees Fahrenheit or if we have a wind chill factor of 10 degrees Fahrenheit. The other factor would be the amount of snowfall at the time of recess. Students may not stay in from outdoor recess unless we have a doctor’s note on file stating that they cannot go outdoors.

As winter weather approaches, I would like to review some of Arbor’s practices and procedures in the handbook regarding school closings. Specifically, we ask that you watch WWMT (Channel 3) or WOOD (Channel 8). We will make every effort to announce the closing by 6:30 am. Also follow us on Facebook and/or sign-up for Remind to receive school closings and news information.

Drop-Off and Pick-Up

Thank you for your continued patience at drop off and pick up times. Please park in a parking spot when you need to stop in to talk to the office or teacher. Dismissal is getting quicker as teachers are recognizing parents and vehicles. Remember to pull forward to keep traffic moving. Please DO NOT park in the fire lane between the two buildings. There is yellow paint and signs stating NO PARKING. Also, please refrain from playing loud music with inappropriate language while waiting for dismissal. Also, please be PATIENT. We have over 200 students to put in cars. Remember we want to set a good example for our Arbor students.

Safety Reminder!!!

We would appreciate it if students did not arrive at school in the morning until 8:00 am. We have supervision available at that time. Students are not to be dropped off at the center island between schools. There is absolutely no parking in the fire lane even if it’s only for a brief period. Parents may park in the parking lot or available spaces in the middle island and walk their child to class. For parents dropping off at the K-3 building, please remember to turn left before the CDC drive, and then exit or proceed to the 3-6 building. Small children are present under the CDC canopy quite frequently, and drive thru traffic for school drop off is prohibited. A reminder to parents to please not leave your car unattended in the circle drive between 8:00 – 8:30 am and between 3:00 – 3:35 pm. This allows us to provide a free flow of traffic and to safely unload/load the students into your car.

ARBOR ACADEMY IS A SMOKE AND DRUG FREE ZONE! No smoking on school grounds/property. Thank you for your cooperation.
