Granger Families,
Here we are already in March. Senior walk is coming up and the spring is in full blown effect. From the landscape of bluebonnets everywhere to the large amount of events happening spring has officially sprung! It is beautiful. We have had kids competing around the state from FCCLA, Tennis, Baseball, Softball, Track, Band, One Act Play, and UIL Academics.
We are so proud of all the kids that compete for themselves, their teammates, our school, and our community. You have so much to be proud of with their commitments. I am also proud of our staff. I will never say things are perfect and we can’t get better, but we definitely have some great team members here that work hard for our kids and Granger ISD is becoming a premiere place to be.
On a different note, right now is a scary time in our world and it is changing at a rapid pace. I am grateful and thank the Lord above for the community we are in every day. Sometimes, it’s easy to be isolated and simply say let’s just stay in our bubble. Unfortunately, if we do that, and look up, we will look around and it will not be good. We are taking measures to increase security in our buildings from reinforcing doors, to creating barriers, to continued group meetings with the city and county to review Emergency Operations Plans, and much more. If you ever have any questions on this, please let us know. It takes all of us.
The 88th Legislative Session is happening now. I’ve had meetings with our representative, Caroline Harris, to advocate for our rural school. There are many issues and bills that Legislators are debating right down the road that will impact Granger ISD. The Granger ISD School Board has said these are their Legislative Priorities:
Local Control- To me this is putting the I in ISD- The word Independent should matter- our board believes that decisions can be made at the local level.
Funding- Our board would like to advocate for enrollment based funding. School districts are currently funded based on the average daily attendance of students, which is less than the total student enrollment. Granger has 558 kids- we do not get funded for over 39 of those kids right now. School districts provide staff and materials for every student enrolled whether they attend regularly or not. Currently, Granger ISD supports the use of enrollment as the standard for school funding, without reducing what they give us per student right now.
Assessment and Accountability - Our board would like to advocate for the establishment of a comprehensive accountability system that looks beyond the STAAR test to meaningful assessments that have value for students, parents, and teachers. The development of a local accountability system would include flexible measures that local communities value and receive official acknowledgement from the Texas Education Agency. We want to decide what is important to us.
Please be an active participant in the Legislative Process and reach out to a representative to be heard, wherever you stand on issues.
In another email tomorrow, I will share a Bond Update and give you an idea of when we will be breaking ground on the new high school this summer. It’s getting closer.
Thank you again for allowing me to be your Superintendent. I’m blessed.
Granger ISD is better because we have families like you.
Thanks!
Jeni Neatherlin
Superintendent

FCCLA News
Marisa and Gaby Garcia are STATE CHAMPS!
They have been spending one day each week with the residents at the assisted living center getting to know them and making a difference. Their project showcased their commitment to making a difference.
Connor Vanek, Wyatt Sanchez, Jack Darley, Jesus Viveros, and Yered Gomez competed in Parliamentary Procedure and placed 3rd. This is a very hard skill to learn and they did an amazing job.
Each of these teams competed against 1A-6A schools.
