Puanga - Matariki
Week 7 - 10th- 14th June at school is Puanga. Throughout this week, all the classes will be involved in activities celebrating Maori culture and language. As a part of this week we would like to have a shared lunch in our house groups. The students will be asked to bring a plate of food to share with their fellow house mates. This will take place on Wedensday 12th June. Because all members of a family are in the same house each family will only need to supply one plate. We will update you with more details closer to the time.
The Māori New Year starts with the new moon of the first month of the cold season this is called Pipiri. Pipiri being the month when people started to come together or to piri back at the main settlement after living in the various food gathering sites during summer and autumn in preparation for the cold months ahead.
Most Māori would call this celebration Matariki, although throughout the Whanganui and Taranaki region it is called Puanga.
