Terra Linda Tiger Tale
October 8, 2020
Principal's Message
Dear Terra Linda Families,
I hope you've had another great week! Students are headed into a 3-day weekend. Our staff will be meeting together in the morning to continue our learning about Anti-Bias/Anti-Racist actions we can take as educators and members of our community. In the afternoon, teachers will be preparing to teach upcoming lessons and units.
I'm sure your family is a bit like mine where you are still learning how to navigate "going to school" at home. One thing I've found helpful for my children is to make sure each of my children gather all of their school supplies in one place before they go to sleep each night. We make sure their device, charger, notebooks, pens and pencils, paper, books to read, whiteboard and marker, and any supplies from their teacher are all in one place. I know some families keep things in a cardboard box, others have a shelf dedicated to these supplies, and others have a drawer set aside to store school supplies. If you haven't figured out a location, you might look for a bag or a box where each child can store what they need for school - and then confirm before going to sleep that everything is ready to go.

Mental Health Awareness Week: October 12-16
The Beaverton School District will be promoting its first Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Awareness Week (October 12-16) to spread awareness of actions that we can all take to prevent suicide and reduce the stigma related to mental health concerns. Last school year, BSD staff completed 138 suicide screenings and/or interventions for elementary-aged students. Unfortunately, we suspect the number of students struggling with a mental health crisis was much higher.
As part of our effort to support student wellness, Terra Linda students will be receiving Social Emotional instruction to promote positive mental health and navigating their feelings. Children and young people in particular can be overwhelmed by stress during an event like the COVID-19 pandemic. These stressors include changes in routine, breaks in continuity of learning, missing significant life events and feeling less safe and secure due to loss of housing or a shortage of food resources.
We wanted to highlight a few resources. Learn more about mental health and how to engage kids in important topics by accessing the resources at eachmindmatters.org. The organization has gathered quite a list of resources. Specifically related to COVID-19, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has developed a Parental Resources Kit. It includes resources, by age group, to help you support your child’s social, emotional and mental well-being.
Book Mobile is Coming!
Book Mobile locations every Tuesday:
- 1:40-2:05 on Marshall St between NW 130th and NW 131st

TAG Nomination Process
Every year students are considered for Talented and Gifted services in the Beaverton School District. These services are provided by your child's classroom teacher(s). Oregon law and District policy define gifted students as those who score at or above the 97th percentile on a standardized, nationally normed test of mental ability and/or academic achievement in reading and/or math. Behavioral, learning, and/or performance information is also considered before a student is identified for TAG services.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and our current reality of Comprehensive Distance Learning, our evaluation process will look different this year. We will administer in-person TAG testing after January 11, 2021. Until then, teachers will collect evidence on how your student responds to differentiation within their distance learning classroom. This evaluation may include: file reviews, teacher and student observations, a collection of work samples, and/or individual or group assessments. This process may take some time, but every effort will be made to complete the evaluation in a timely manner. Parents will be notified of their school’s in-person testing dates in January.
If you think your child might qualify for TAG services, you may wish to complete the Parent Information Form that is available in our school’s office or linked below. Completing this form gives our school TAG Committee more information about your child, but it is not required. All qualified students will be considered regardless of the form’s completion.
Please complete and return the Parent Information Form to our office at Terra Linda. You can drop it off during any of our Grab & Go events, you can send it by mail, or you can send it as an attachment in an email to elizabeth_sarles@beaverton.k12.or.us

Family Learning Agreements
What happens when you have to work and your kids do, too? Set up a family agreement for working and learning from home!
Tips for Grab & Go Days: Every Tuesday & Thursday from 11:00-12:00
What is Available? Grab & Go Days are every Tuesday and Thursday at Terra Linda from 11:00-12:00. All families are invited to pick up free breakfast & lunch for all children in their family. You do not need to be eligible for Meal Benefits to pick up free meals.
If items are available for an entire grade level, your child's teacher will let you know what day to come to pick them up. You can also watch News & Notes for details of upcoming Grab & Go Days. Be sure to look at the Upcoming Events calendar above to see what items are available each day.
What do we Need to Bring?
Anything you need to turn in to Terra Linda (paperwork, etc).
Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade students need to bring the set of books they received the previous week and exchange them for a new set. Please place them in the book bag labeled with your child's name.
In order to get a new stack, you need to return the old stack. It is okay if you are missing some books. Just keep looking for them and return them the following week. We are taking pictures of the books we send home to you, so if you don’t return all of the books, we will send you a picture on Seesaw of the book(s) you still need to locate. We are hoping to keep them as a set to give to another reader.
What to do if you cannot attend a Grab & Go day for your child? Just call our office at 503-356-2490 and make arrangements to pick up items anytime after the scheduled day and time. We are not able to have items prepared early. The only thing we cannot distribute at other times is breakfast & lunch.
What if we have children who have a Grab & Go event on both Tuesday and Thursday? You can come to Terra Linda on both Tuesday and Thursday, or you can wait until Thursday to pick up everything for your family. Unfortunately we won't have Thursday's items ready on Tuesday.
Library Books: Anyone who has placed a hold on a Terra Linda library book by Monday each week can pick up the book(s) on Thursday each week.
Masks Required: Please wear a mask to participate in Grab & Go.
Drive or Walk: You are welcome to arrive in a vehicle or walk up to our meal or supply distribution lines. We have a staff member stationed in our cross walk connecting the Terra Linda Neighborhood and our school.
