IMLEA Back to School Minute

August, 2018

What is the Monday Minute?

The "Monday Minute" is a weekly newsletter sent to IMLEA (Indiana Middle Level Education Association) members, highlighting special opportunities, grants, and resources. Because we know you are all busy, it is generally designed to take little more than a minute to read and pass along. This issue is the first of the 2018-19 school year; we are sending it to a wider audience this week, and it is a bit longer than usual. Some of you have already been in school for a week, some have yet to start. Here's to a great 2018-19 year!

This year's annual conference will be held at the beautiful Marriott North Hotel. Conference information can be found on our special site, or on the IMLEA website. You may register now or reserve hotel rooms at special conference rates. The keynote with Ben Glenn will be on Sunday, September 16, with six different time slots and nearly 40 choices on Monday the 17th. IMLEA members can send a team of 5 for under $600 (and that includes all sessions, breakfast, lunch).

You may take advantage of the early bird rate and register staff by August 15 and send us final names later. Registration may be paid by check, credit card, purchase order, or PayPal.

Big picture

Conference Theme: The Middle Matters!

As we received session proposals, and as events happened, a theme emerged: the middle school years are crucial to social emotional development in our students, and needed supports are encompassing an ever-wider range. To that end, among a wide variety of topics, we have sessions on trauma-informed schools, restorative practices, MTSS, RtB, and dealing with challenging behaviors. One of our presenters, Amber Schroering, suggests this article that relates to Brownsburg's experiences, and our board member Kristy Stephens shared this article, "When Students are Traumatized, Teachers Are Too." We think our conference is a great opportunity for classroom teachers and administrators to learn from each other; there is a special kind of energy when hundreds of middle level educators get together!

Time Sensitive Opportunity: Kick Start a Donors Choose Project, This Week Only!

Teachers who submit their first project ever by August 10 will automatically receive $50 toward their project, and contributions made during this week will be matched. Those who have previously posted will receive $25 toward a project by referring someone else (pair up your teachers so two can benefit at once!)

Great Back to School Resource

This outstanding HyperDoc by @KellyIHilton does a wonderful job of introducing many tools her students will be using throughout the year. You are welcome to make a copy and modify for your own use (please be sure to give her credit.) Many other free HyperDocs are available at this site, TeachersGiveTeacher (This was also shared in our Midsummer Minute.)
K-12 students can apply to have projects launched into space! Find out how here.
