Samantha Silveira accepted to champlain college's young writers' conference
Seekonk Junior Samantha Silveira was recently accepted to the Champlain College Young Writers’ Conference from May 25-27 in Burlington, VT. This is no easy feat as students are required to submit a writing sample on which they are judged. Now that she has been accepted to this program, Samantha will experience three days of readings, improv theater, Moth storytelling, poetry slams, and literary jazz/blues fusion. In the words of one of her teachers, Mrs. Pomfret; "Sam is a gifted writer and I am very proud of her! I know it will be an amazing experience!" As expected, Samantha is very excited. Be sure to congratulate her when you see her!

Mentally Tough vs. Optimistic
Mental toughness is something that is very near and dear to me. I often speak of its value and the importance of practicing it as we continue to build our character. I recently had my perspective twisted by some very impressive people however. I found that what I currently practice as well as preach may be a little off base.
I wrote a full blog post about it here. I encourage you to read it, but have a brief summary below along with the video if you do not.
I always viewed mental toughness as the ability to push past hardship that I may encounter along the way. I took it as a manner in which I was able to steel myself against failure so that I could learn and continue on to success. While I believe this is still clearly an important aspect of this trait, I heard a podcast today that made me reexamine the core of this belief and expand my perception for a more complete understanding of mental toughness.
The podcast explained that mental toughness has to do with the ability to manage your emotions, thoughts, and behavior in ways that set you up for greater levels of success in any situation. She goes on to explain that there is a difference between optimists and positive thinkers. Simplified by me, LaRae Quy (speaker) defines this as the idea that optimists believe that everything will get better while positive thinkers set a plan to make things better. They acknowledge how things are and then act to make them better.
I combine this information with my current beliefs to come to the following:
Success lies in front of everyone. All they have to do is reach out and take it. This may be more difficult for some than others based on a variety of circumstances, but the fact remains; mental toughness gives you the fortitude to withstand failure, come to an authentic acknowledgement of your current situation, and formulate and act on a plan to find success regardless.
In short I ask myself and those around me to be mentally tough, to push through difficulties and overcome the obstacles in their path. I ask people to take action to improve their circumstances rather than waiting out the storm.
How do you develop and show your mental toughness? How do you act in the face of adversity? Are you mentally tough?

Seekonk High School Job Shadow Program
Local Professionals Needed to Help Guide Students' Career Exploration!
Can you help a student make more informed choices about their career and college plans? Consider volunteering to be a job shadow host and/or the subject of an informational interview. We will put your name on a list of possible contacts for students interested in doing in depth career exploration.
We welcome professionals from all fields to come forward; currently, however, we have three specific areas in which students would like to make contact. We are looking for a social worker and an engineer. If you or anyone you know works in one of those areas and are willing to help a student investigate career paths, please reach out to Mrs. Calverley, Career Specialist, at 508-336-7272, xt.62447.
FYI: Job shadow hosts allow a student to visit you at your place of business to get a first-hand look at the job and have time to ask questions and get expert advice. Informational Interviewees would come to Seekonk High School to meet with a student or small group of students who are interested in knowing more about your line of work. There is no minimum time commitment in either role--this is done at your convenience.
Anyone wishing to be on the list must consent to a CORI (background) check, which can be processed at the Main Office.
Feel free to spread the word to your friends, neighbors, and SHS alumni.
Questions? Please contact Janet Fitzgerald, Transition Coordinator, 508-336-7272, ext. 62459
Nurse - Mrs. Rok

The Spring Sports Season at Seekonk High School and is up and running and now is the perfect time to reflect back on an eventful 2017-2018 Seekonk High Winter Season. The Seekonk Girls Swim team successfully defended their Conference Championship by winning it again for the second consecutive season while the Boys team finished second. The Girls and Boys Indoor Track teams put together highly successful seasons highlighted by Junior shot putter Cammie Garabian who won not only the State Championship and the New England Regional Championship but finishing eighth at the National Championship, a truly remarkable accomplishment. Both the Girls and Boys Basketball teams went through, what could be best described as injury-riddled seasons, as both Coaching Staffs are hard at work to get their teams back into post season play next season. Finally, the 2017-2018 Winter Season marked the return of Winter Cheerleading at Seekonk High for the first time in over a decade and the girls finished second in the SCC Championship.
For the second year in a row, Sophomore Mia DiBiase, a SCC All Conference player, has been selected to the All Area Attleboro Sun Chronicle Girls Basketball All Star Team. Congratulations! SCC All Conference Seekonk High swimmer Robert Strycharz was also named to the Attleboro Sun Chronicle All Area Team in swim.
State Champion and New England Regional Shot Put Champion Cammie Garabian received a spot on the Attleboro Sun Chronicle All Area Indoor Track team for the third time in her career and has also been named to the Boston Globe All Scholastic Indoor Track Team. This is the second time Cammie has been named to the Globe’s All Scholastic Team. Cammie was named to last year’s Boston Globe All Scholastic Outdoor Track Team. Way to go Cammie!
Coach DeMelo’s Varsity baseball team’s home scrimmage with the Big Red from North Attleboro High School originally scheduled for tomorrow morning at 11 AM right here at Seekonk High has been postponed as well as Monday’s originally scheduled home scrimmage with the Townies of East Providence High School. The team will open their varsity pre season scrimmage schedule travelling to Attleboro High School Wednesday for a 3:30 tilt.
Coach Nelson’s Unified Track and Field team, last year’s Massachusetts Division One State Champions, will start their season next week with workouts on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon.
The Seekonk High School Boys and Girls Swim teams will hold their 2017-2018 Season Banquet Tuesday evening at 6:30 in the Seekonk High Cafeteria and the Seekonk High School Boys Basketball team will conduct their banquet Thursday evening also at 6:30 in the SHS Cafeteria.
