Principal's Pen
Things to be grateful for. We have wrapped up the Jr and Sr volleyball seasons and if someone had told me we would make it this far without things being shut down at the beginning of the season I would not have believed them. The amount of work that goes into putting on Conference, District, Regional, or Provincial tournaments in these times cannot be measured. I would like to thank all of the places that took this task on, as well as all of the coaches, managers, volunteers, canteen workers, officials, etc who worked so hard to give this opportunity to the kids. You don’t know what you have until it is gone, and after last year everyone was determined to make this happen.
I want to congratulate all of these teams for representing our town well both athletically and through sportsmanship. Every team earned their way to play on the last possible day they could, and that is no small accomplishment. A special well done to those grade 12’s in their last year. You represented us through the years and through this year of uncertainty and I hope that the lessons you learned along the way do you well in the years to come.
Our Elementary volleyball tournament is coming up on Thursday, and I always find it amazing how the older students create a legacy for these future stars. It is not a coincidence that we have a tradition of success, when you see many of our student athletes helping out at the elementary events, making a connection and encouraging the younger ones to be involved. The pep rallys, live streaming and hosting of events creates a culture of involvement that carries over to the community and beyond.
Continuing to do something just because it’s always been done that way is not a valid reason. Traditions, however, are important. Our school and community has always been supportive of our younger people looking to get involved, and that is something that we have always done that I hope will never go away.

What a great way to end a season. Everything came together at the right time and the boys were able to pull off a 4th place finish at provincials. This is no easy task as the top ten 1A teams in the province came together to fight it out for top spot. Our season began in Wilkie with a tournament there and a bunch of guys who have not had a chance to play a lot of volleyball over the last few years. The next two tournaments ended up being cancelled and the season looked in jeopardy.
Unity was next and we began to see some progress and we took that into Fox Valley where we finished second. Our next tournament got cancelled and seemed like every time we were building momentum something got in the way.
Finally we were able to put a run of tournaments together as we went through NBCHS, Vermilion, Conferences, Regionals, and finally provincials. The boys showed continued progress through each one of these tournaments and we were able to reach our peak at the right time back in Fox Valley at provincials fighting our way to the bronze medal match. We ended up in fourth which means we brought a provincial plaque home which is no small accomplishment.
Congratulations to all the guys, especially Ethan Paul who finished his last year of play on a high note and played extremely well along with the rest of the guys.
Thanks for all your support and see you next year.

Senior Girls Volleyball
We started the year with 14 girls excited for a season where we could actually PLAY the game.
COVID restrictions made for some interesting times this season. Some girls chose to not play the full year, some times we went to tournaments with only six players, and some tournaments were cancelled. But we are calling the year (to quote Borat) a “Great Success!”.
We had several highlight moments, winning a tournament in Lloydminster, winning our home tournament and then winning both the Conference Championships and Regional Championships right here in our own gym. Those victories earned us a spot at the SHSAA 1-A Girls Provincial Championships. The final competition for our grade 12 girls would be at the highest level possible. WOW! Loreburn and Davidson,,, here we come!!!!
We finished 1-3 in the round robin and qualified for the playoffs at provincials where we were taken out by the eventual gold medal team. It was a tough loss, but an amazing experience.
We all must thank our graduating players, Gracie Hundt, Shaylin Knot, Genna Roth, Paris Starr, and Madalyn Wouters. They played with grit and determination and led with compassion and respect. To our grade 10 players, Angel, Shae, Madison, Zoe, Tori, and Kaylee, keep on the Mustang tradition next year of quality play and excellent sportsmanship.
Every year has its highlights. For me it was how this team showed great sportsmanship and were very respectful of officials, opponents and the sport of volleyball. They were excellent ambassadors for our school and our community.
We made it to provincials ladies. As much as I am proud of the team you became, I am more proud of the young ladies you are.
Thank you to Stacy Hill as our assistant coach. Her knowledge of the game was invaluable. Thank you to Lisa Knot for the organizing and many hours keeping our team going in the right direction.
Proud to be a Mustang
