How to Write an Argumentative Essay by Shmoop
You are going to learn the art of argumentative writing!
We are going to learn how to make a claim, support that claim with evidence, and get our point across to our audience. If you want someone to listen to your point of view and take you seriously this unit is for you! **Remember rhetorical fallacies that we've studied**
Here are the three main areas you need to focus on:
Statement of Purpose/Focus
You must CLEARLY state your claim and stay focused! All claims must be supported with relevant evidence.
Organization
Your intro needs to address your audience and purpose, and you need to use transition words throughout your essay. You need to have a strong connection between reasons and evidence, and have an effective concluding statement.
Elaboration of Evidence
You need to convincingly support your claim with evidence, clearly acknowledge the opposing claim (counter-argument), and specifically cite your evidence throughout your paper.
