Staff Spotlight
Lauren Neal-Mannenbach
1. What classes do you teach and/or programs and activities do you work with at Westview?
I teach STEM Chemistry and Chemistry 1.
2. How long have you been at WHS?
This is my 5th year at WHS and my 5th year teaching after a long career in retail.
3. What do you enjoy most about the Westview community?
The thing I enjoy most about the Westview community is that, even though we are large, I still feel like we have a sense of community. I feel like I could approach any other teacher about a common student and we could have a conversation about how to better support that student's needs. I feel that I've been able to build good relationships with the majority of the students I've had in class. I feel that I could voice my concerns to administration and that my opinions are considered instead of dismissed. The thing that probably stands out the most though, is the sense of caring for each other within the staff. You could be having a bad day/week/month/year and there are a huge number of people who will offer to buy you coffee, let you cry on their shoulder, cover a class, or change their plans so they can help you through the moment.
4. If you could have a gigantic billboard anywhere with anything on it - metaphorically speaking, getting a message out to millions or billions - what would it say and why?
If I could have a giant billboard with anything on it, it would probably say "practice makes permanent," because I think that is a more goal-oriented way of saying "old habits die hard." In their own way, I think both of those sayings illustrate the same concept that change is difficult and it is easy to fall back on familiar routines, so if you want to change the way you do something, it usually takes time and dedication to make that change happen.
Counselor Appreciation Week!
This week marks National School Counselor Week. We are so fortunate to have eight amazing school counselors: Ms. Fix, Mr. Rosser, Mr. Baker, Ms. Schuh, Ms. Pearson, Ms. Budhi, Ms. Wright and Ms. Stremme.
Westview's counseling mission is to utilize strengths to collaborate for systemic change. By identifying and eliminating barriers, students will be able to access their educational, college and future career goals that will no longer be determined based on race, ethnicity, family economics, mobility, gender, sexual orientation, disability or initial proficiencies. We commit to strengthen and establish a Westview community where all staff, students and families can find a place to belong.
Westview Counselors offer:
College & Career Guidance Curriculum- This curriculum consist of structured lessons designed to help students discover and plan for their futures after high school.
Individual Student Academic Planning- Professional school counselors coordinate ongoing activities designed to help students establish personal goals and develop future plans.
Responsive Services- Professional school counselors develop confidential relationships with students to help them resolve or cope with problems and developmental concerns. Responsive services may include preventative and/or intervention activities which may require any of the following:
- Individual or group counseling
- Consultation with parents, teachers, other educators, and community supports
- Referrals to other school support services or community resources
- Social and emotional support
Stop by and thank a counselor for their work with our students, families, and administrators.
Thank you, WHS Counselors, for all you do for the Westview community!
