Ms. Newton's Notes
Happy Monday!
Not sure if you are a 49ers fan or a Chiefs fan or not a fan at all, but the Superbowl game was a very good watch! If you stayed up, like I did, you may have had a slow start to your Monday morning. Nevertheless, the week is here and we are excited about all that is to come!
Service Updates
Last month, I did a call for examples of service that families engaged in for MLK day. Check one of our F.AVE Falcon highlights!
Shout out to Charlie who belongs to Cubscout pack 175 in Decatur who engages MLK service activity every year. This year they helped a Decatur citizen, who can't do yard work, clean up their yard. At 8:30 Saturday morning he and his pack filled 120 yard bags full of yard debris. Way to go Charlie and friends!
National Counselor Appreciation Month
We are celebrating and sending a big shout out to our school counselor, Dr. Rebecca Root. She has been with F.AVE since we opened at this location and works with students, individually, in groups and conducts classroom guidance lessons to all classes. In addition to this, she does many other things to support our school, staff and students. Please join us in celebrating her this week.
Mead Road Mardi Gras Parade
Join your F.AVE Krewe as we celebrate Mardi Gras by being on the royal court. We will all dress as Mardi Gras Kings and Queens. Find your most extravagant crowns and hats and join us this Saturday! We'll have crowns and beads on site, so if you don't have any swag don't worry! Just come and be a part of the fun. We'd love to have as many F.AVE families join us as possible!
Box Tops:
Box Tops have gone digital!! Download the App, Box Tops for Education. Enter your information, select Fifth Avenue Upper Elementary, scan receipts and done! If you still have hard copy box tops, we are still collecting them in the box in front of the Media Center. There is a box labeled Box Tops for Education. Thank you!
PARENT SURVEYS
Georgia Parent Survey
As part of the Georgia Department of Education school climate rating for schools, parents, student , and staff are asked to complete parent surveys. The parent survey information is below. Please note that you may come to the school to complete this survey as well as complete it on a personal computer or device. Thank you in advance for taking the time to support our school.
The Georgia Parent Survey contains 24 questions. Parents may complete the survey using their personal computer, smartphone, or tablet. For parents who do not have access to the Internet, the media center will be open from 7:30 AM - 3:30 PM to allow parents to complete the Georgia Parent Survey at school on the media center computers. All parents should be encouraged to participate in the Georgia Parent Survey because the data will be used as part of the calculation of the School Climate Star Rating. Survey responses are anonymous, self-reported, and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis. The Georgia Parent Survey is also available in Spanish. Parents may select the Spanish version within the survey. The Georgia Parent Survey link is posted below.
Georgia Parent Survey:
https://gshs.gadoe.org/parents
The IDEA Parent Survey will be open from January 15, 2020 – May 31, 2020.
The IDEA Parent Survey helps the state to determine parents’ perception of the success of parent engagement between the local school and themselves. The information is gathered as a component of the State Performance Plan, Indicator 8: Percent of parents with a student receiving special education services who report that schools facilitated parent involvement as a means of improving results for children with disabilities. The data collected is reported in the Annual Performance Report and on the system profile about each system. Each state is required to conduct a parent survey collection process to measure parent/family needs and perceptions.
Georgia’s parent survey is available to all families of students with disabilities. The survey will be administered through an online link and can be found on the websites listed below.

I Love My Bus / Walk & Roll: 2/11
February is "I LOVE MY BUS" month! Riding the school bus is important not only because it’s safe, cuts down on traffic congestion, and reduces air pollution; but riding the school bus is also a time for students to bond with their peers and increases the likelihood that students will arrive at school on time and ready to learn!
Next Tuesday, February 11, we’ll be combining ‘I love my bus’ with our regularly scheduled Walk & Roll. We’ll be handing out numbered certificates to all Walkers & Rollers & Bus Riders as part of our monthly book drawing. In addition, we’ll have special guests from GA Commute Schools handing out special incentives to all Bus Riders. Let’s keep our cars home next Tuesday, February 11. Have your child walk, roll, or ride the bus to school! If you cannot walk all the way, consider driving to Harmony Park (corner of Mead, Oakview, and Eastlake) and walk the final 0.4 miles. There are plenty of parking spots around that area, and you’ll be sure to meet many other families doing the same. Additional 'Stop, Drop, and Walk' routes to F.Ave are found here (https://www.csdecatur.net/Page/1647). If you must drive, please be extra cautious that morning, as there will be more children walking or riding their bikes. Give them extra room (remember, a 3 foot distance is the law, but more is always better!), as they might not be as sturdy or mindful on their bikes as adults.
