The Sophomore Scene with Team 2019
September 2016
Fall Festivities
I hope that everyone was able to enjoy Labor Day weekend. It has been a great start to the school year for Team 2019 and all of BHS. Seeing all of Brownsburg Community Schools come together to raise over $15,000 in one week for Riley Children's Hospital was inspiring. The crowds at the football and other fall sports games have been huge, and students are working hard in the classrooms every day! Lots of big events coming up this month including Homecoming, so please make sure to read carefully below for all the important information you need. (Homecoming game and parade Sept. 23rd & Homecoming Dance Sept. 24th)
As a team, we look forward to meeting with all of our families at some point throughout the school year so please reach out to us about setting up a meeting time. You will find all of our contact information at the bottom of the newsletter.
Sincerely,
Adam Poliskie
Assistant Principal Team 2019
Parking for 2016-17
I would first like to say that I have appreciated your patience as we have worked through the parking situation at BHS. After meeting with our administrative team and our school safety personnel we have determined that we are going to allow sophomores on Team 2019 to register for parking passes effective immediately. There will be a limited number of passes available and passes will be available on a first come first serve basis.
Please click on the following link and then select student vehicle registration packet: parking pass information. Make sure that you and your student have read and filled out all of the necessary information correctly before bringing the paperwork to the main office.
Students who have not registered their vehicle with the school and who do not have a parking pass are not allowed to drive to school. If there are any further questions about parking please contact Mr. Poliskie.
Team 2019 Homecoming Float Building
Homecoming week is the week of September 19th – 23rd. Each class will be building a float to enter in the Homecoming parade. In order to make this a safe and fun event, parent involvement is critical! We need parents to help in the following ways:
- Encourage your student to participate!! Float building is Monday-Thursday night from 5-8 at the Maintenance Facility garages. The facility is located at 7570 E County Rd. 400 N. From the High School, go south on O’Dell St to Airport Rd. Turn right on Airport Rd. (E County Road 400 N) and you will see the buildings on the right.
- Participate with your students if possible! We need parents who have tools and can help us use them. We need drills, power saws, hammers, screw drivers, etc. We also need parents who would be willing to help with construction.
- Since the students are with us from 5 pm - 8 pm (“dinnertime”) we ask that parents donate snacks for the builders. It is great if we have a more substantial snack- pizza, bread sticks, hot dips, sub sandwiches, last year we even had a parent tailgate for us! However, anything that you are willing to donate is fantastic. In the past we have had cookies, chips, pop, juice boxes, etc.
If you are willing to build or donate snacks please email Ms. Burke (sburke@brownsburg.k12.in.us) for additional information.
Career exploration - College Go Week - PSAT Testing
College Go Week is September 26th-October 1st. In preparation, Mrs. Frazer will be in your student’s English classroom September 19th-27th to complete a career interest survey to help in narrowing down interests in future careers and college planning. The career interest survey is also a requirement of the 21st century scholars program for sophomore year.
PSAT
All sophomores and juniors will take the PSAT on November 2nd. The state of Indiana currently pays for all students to take the exam. Students will receive further information and materials as we get closer to this date. This is a great chance to practice and experience this test, so attendance on November 2nd is extremely important!
21st Century Scholars - requirements
A reminder that your student MUST have a 2.5 cumulative GPA when they graduate to earn their scholarship AND complete the scholar success program. Cumulative GPA is hard to change, so it is imperative your student maintain a 2.5 or higher GPA. Your student has a Scholartrack account to log their required activities. Please visit scholars.in.gov to log in. If your student needs further academic assistance, we encourage them to seek help from their classroom teacher. They are the best resource for input on how your child is doing in the classroom and can assist them with their areas of need.
If you have any questions about the 21st century scholars program please contact Mrs. Frazer (rfrazer@brownsburg.k12.in.us).
End of Quarter and Academic Assistance
As quarter one comes to an end on September 30th, remember that 40% of your student's semester grade comes from their quarter one grade. If they are struggling in a class there are several options for help. The best way to get help in a class is to contact the teacher to set up a time before or after school for assistance. You can contact them directly by email or phone to set up a time that works for both the teacher and your student.
Also, be sure to check Schoology for upcoming homework, quiz, and test information. If you notice your student has any missing assignments, please contact the teacher to get more information. If you need additional assistance, please contact Ms. Burke (Ext. 1702 or sburke@brownsburg.k12.in.us).
Operational Reminders
Picture Retakes – September 15th
Picture retake day is scheduled for Thursday, September 15th. If your student was unable to have their picture taken during registration, or if you are choosing to have their picture retaken, please stop by the Team 2019 office and make an appointment with Mrs. Matherly.
Students choosing to have a retake done must return their photo order or proof to the photographer on September 15th. Picture packages and proofs were delivered to all students during 7th period last Friday, August 19th.
All students must have their photo taken by the photographer in order to appear in the yearbook, but you do not have to order a photo package.
Attendance/Appointments
Thank you, parents, for calling in early for attendance and appointments! If your child is going to be absent from school, please call Mrs. Matherly as early as possible that morning. Please do the same with appointments. Your child can be ready and waiting at Door 1 for you if you call ahead. Voicemail messages can be left at any time, and email messages are welcome as well (jmatherly@brownsburg.k12.in.us)
