Mrs. Nagy's 1st Grade Class
First Grade is One in a Minion!
Hello Parents! It is hard to believe we are into our last quarter of our school year! February was a very busy month! Here are a few things to get us ready for the remainder of the month!
- Book order -A book order should have come home in your child's folder! Please feel free to use the link below to place an order or return the order to school April 27th. THIS WILL BE THE LAST BOOK ORDER OF THE YEAR!!! New books are a great way to keep your child inspired to keep reading over the summer!!!
- Reach for the Stars - The reading program that came home last week will continue this week. Our school goal is to get every child to read 30 minutes each day. Please be sure your child is recording their minutes in the stars on the sheet provided. We will have your child return their form at the end of this week!
Book it – Our Book It program ended in the month of March! I am so proud of all the students for the continued effort in reading! Thank you to all of you for helping the students participate in this program.
AR - Keep those books coming! We have less than one month for your student to reach the first grade goal of 40 points. That is 80 books by May 12th. Any questions, please let me know! I will be sending home a comprehensive list of all the books your child has taken an AR on so far this year to help you determine how close your child may be to reaching 40! First grade is the only grade in the whole school that has ALL students at 10 AR points or more!
DIBELS - Our DIBEL practice will continue for the next couple of weeks. My hope is that your child is finding this fun and exciting to see that their reading skills improve each day that they read the same passage. They love coming in to share their success with me! I love to see this excitement! Any questions, please let me know!
Fluency Sticks - Coming home with your child this week is a "FLUENCY STICK". This is a teacher created math tool to help your child become more fluent in their addition and subtraction math facts. This was a very labor intensive project to get underway, so please encourage your child to take care of this tool. This tool should travel with your child to school every day in the issued envelope. We will use this at school and it should also be used at home each night as a part of daily homework. My goal in utilizing this tool is to help each child find success in mastering math facts. This is an IMPERATIVE skill that they possess entering 2nd grade. I have taken the time to assess each child and have started them on the set of math facts I feel they should begin. Mastery of a math fact means they can supply the answer in 3 seconds consistently. I will assess the children at the end of each week to re-adjust their stick! PLEASE DO NOT MOVE THE FLASH CARDS! I will do this after I have assessed each student. There will be some parent information accompanying this tool as well. I am very excited to see an improvement in their abilities!
MONEY, MONEY, MONEY-Although we have not "officially" started our math unit on measurement and money, we have been talking and learning about coins, their value and how to count them since the first day ! I still need coins from the following students: Sebastian, Jordan, Lillian, Trystan, Lucas, and Kaiden. Please send a ziploc labeled with your child's name that includes 25 pennies, 5 nickels, 5 dimes, 4 quarters. Please send the coins as soon as possible. Thank you!
Romeo and Lou - As you have all had the experience, our classroom has been participating in a class project of Romeo and Lou. They have made their rounds through each and every child's home...but as requested by the students, they would each like another turn with our furry friends!! If the children are willing and excited, then I am too! Please enjoy them when they visit! If you take pictures but do not have a way to print them, please email them to me and I can print them at school. The children love to see the pics!!!! If you get a chance, enjoy reading the journal the children write in and see all the pictures. Such an awesome collection of memories! I would really like to try and create a copy of the journal for each child to keep. *If anyone has any low cost ideas, please let me know!*
- READ TO CLASS - The students have really embraced reading to the class. All students that wanted to do it have done so and we have since placed a new list for your child to read AGAIN, if they would like. Your child does not have to participate, but it is amazing how compassionate and sweet the students are to each other when it is story time. Reading out loud to peers is a great way to gain confidence!!! Please encourage your child to sign up if they have not done so!
- REPORT CARDS - Report cards will be coming home on Friday. Please contact me if there are any questions or needs for a conference!
I hope this brings us up-to-date with our classroom events. I know this is a lot of things all at once! Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions!

MATH
We have finished our unit on place value in which all the children really found success!!!. We are finishing up a chapter on learning to compare numbers and will start working with coins, time and measurement! As mentioned above, the fluency stick will come home to help your child continue to build a good foundation on basic facts. The students have created a foundation of many strategies to add and subtract numbers, so we will turn our focus on 2-D and 3-D geometry, graphing and data, and measurement!
