Bulldog Bulletin
October 27, 2017
Dear Bulldog Families,
This week was the kickoff for our parent-teacher conferences. Our goal for parent-teacher conferences is to develop a shared picture with you regarding your child’s learning. This dialogue is important so we can share information concerning learning strengths and challenges seen at home and school. The home-school partnership is critical to the growth and development of our children; we really appreciate your collaboration. Please do not be alarmed if there are areas of concern or challenge for your child. This is an opportunity for us to work together to support student learning and growth. This past summer the Bulldog staff, read Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol Dweck, Ph.D. A few powerful take-aways are:
o Learning is a process and takes time
o Effort, not just achievement, should be recognized
o Failure helps us learn
o Intelligence is not “fixed” – when learning something is a challenge, we are not able to do it YET
o Persistence is powerful when it comes to learning new things
On Monday, October 23, you should have received an HSE Skylert email message regarding next year’s school calendar. Please be sure to take this survey by Friday, November 3. Hamilton Southeastern School Corporation values parent input and looks forward to creating a calendar most supportive of our students. There are many considerations when creating optimal learning conditions for our students – please view this video to hear from Dr. Bourff regarding The Big Picture.
As October comes to an end, fall AND SCIENCE are in the air. We would like to invite our Bulldog families to our first Family Science Night. Please join us on Tuesday, November 7 from 6:30-7:30. There will be opportunities to participate in student-designed STEM challenges, science experiments, and even try your hand at coding with Ozobots. For families with scientists in grades 1-4, there will also be information available regarding our upcoming New Britton Science Fair. There are so many questions to ask and investigate!! As always, thank you for partnering with us in education. Have a great October weekend!
Sincerely,
Lori Mankin

STAFF SPOTLIGHT
--- Handbook Highlights ---
Each Bulldog Bulletin will highlight a portion of the New Britton Student Handbook. This month's focus is Communicable / Contagious Diseases.
Hamilton Southeastern Schools recognizes its responsibility in the control and spread of communicable disease. The Corporation has adopted as its standard, the protocol established for communicable or contagious disease control as stated in the Indiana State Department of Health Communicable Diseases Reference Guide for School Personnel. Healthy children perform at their best. After any illness, your child should be fever free (temp < 100) for twenty four (24) hours before returning to school. Not all contagious illnesses are accompanied by fever; therefore, the child must also be symptom free for twenty-four (24) hours before returning to school in order to protect others from infection. Symptom free would include fever, vomiting, and diarrhea free for twenty-four (24) hours. We encourage parents to communicate their child’s illness or diagnosis with the school nurse so that he/she can track the rate of incidence of any of the following conditions in his/her building.
