South East Update
October 2019
Hello Little Hawk Families
What a beautiful start to the month of October! I hope everyone is excited for a fall break and has plans to enjoy this beautiful fall weather over the 4 day weekend! Midterms were this week so please make sure you are keeping up with PowerSchool and checking in with your student's teachers if you have questions. We do have fall conferences coming up in a few weeks, but always know that you do not need to wait for conferences to meet with or talk with a teacher. We are happy to work with you as a team to ensure success for your student.
As always, thank you for sharing your most precious gifts with us. It is truly an honor to work with you and your students. Thank you for being a part of our community!

CLASS UPDATES
Ms. Eslami Literacy
Hi, Parents & Guardians!
In Ms. Eslami’s 7th-grade Literacy class, we have started reading The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. Students will be given some entire class periods to work, but they will also be required to complete reading as homework (audio of the text can be found on Google Classroom, but students should still follow along in the book). Assignments are on paper, but there will be copies on Google Classroom for students to print out if needed. Students also have a bookmark that has the timeline for due dates, just in case they forget. Here is the timeline if you would like to take a look at it. The goal is to be finished with the novel by October 30th so we can begin watching the movie on October 31st. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns. My email address is eslami.elizabeth@iowacityschools.org.
Thank you,
Ms. Eslami
Orchestra
In late September, the South East Orchestras received a special treat. Guest performer and local Violist, Tyler Hendrickson, came to SE and performed selections from his upcoming tour featuring works from forgotten composers of the early 20th Century. He will be performing the full set of works in a FREE concert for the public on Saturday, October 5th. The concert will begin at 7pm at the Preucil School of Music Main Campus (524 N. Johnson St., Iowa City). This concert is for the whole family.
The Music Auxiliary Car Wash was cancelled due to thunderstorms. If you were hoping to donate to the music auxiliary at the car wash, please consider making an online donation instead: http://iowacitymusicauxiliary.org/car-wash/

PBIS INFORMATION
PBIS Rewards App
What Parents Can See and Do
Our School is using PBIS Rewards to help us with our PBIS program. PBIS Rewards is a technology-based PBIS Management System that helps us with our behavior incentive program. You can learn about PBIS Rewards at their website (www.pbisrewards.com). Our students can earn rewards throughout the day by meeting our behavior expectations. These rewards are in the form of electronic points. They can redeem these points for privileges, tangible items, access to events, and other similar things.
Our expectation is that we will see overall behavior improve throughout the school and that the number of referrals we have will decrease. PBIS Rewards has a Parent App that will give you some insight into how your child is doing with respect to our PBIS program.
The Parent App will run on most smart devices, including smartphones and tablets. You can find it in the iPhone/iPad App Store, Google Play, and the Amazon App Store. Just search for "PBIS Rewards Parent". We will be sending home your parent PBIS Rewards letter this week, there will be a code to scan to start setting up your account.

Stadium Clean Up
If you have a student that is out for a fall sport or is planning to participate in one of our winter or spring sports we need your help. South East Jr. High is responsible for cleaning the south end zone of Kinnick Stadium 10/13, and 11/24. Gates open at 7:00 AM. We are usually done by 8:15. If you have a gas leaf blower we encourage you to bring it with you. The more blowers we have the better job we do and the sooner we are done. If you do not have a blower, report to the concourse under the west stands to get brooms and bags. We encourage recycling of all cardboard and plastic items. There are recycling bags available in the west concourse. Please start at the top of the stadium and work down. Move all waste materials to an aisle and then clean the aisles from the top down. All bags of garbage and recyclables should be moved to the concourse area. South East is responsible for the entire south end zone so please stay until we are all done. This a major athletic fundraising activity for South East. The money that we receive helps pay for athletic uniforms and equipment for all sports. Thanks in advance for your help.
