Teaching Tip Spotlight
Understanding by Design (Backwards Design)
What's worth understanding?
It's easy to get distracted by covering content and marching through a textbook, but truthfully not all of that information is relevant in the field.
If we're clear about what we want students to understand, we can prioritize teaching and focus curriculum. Delta determines what students ought to understand and lays those out in course outcomes and objectives (O&O). These O&O's can be found in the course catalog.
How will you track student progress toward understanding?
If it's worth understanding, it's worth showing progress towards that understanding. What tool will you choose for learners to demonstrate their understanding of the content? Does it align with your objective?
How should I get started?
One unit at a time. Use backwards design to revamp one unit each semester. Start small, try a unit out, get some feedback, revise. Eventually the backwards planning style will become more natural and revamping the rest of your units will feel easy.
Consider scheduling some time with an instructional designer to work through this process. Two brains are often better than one, especially when thinking backwards.
Active Learning Strategies
What's new in D2L?
Intelligent Agent Templates
- Do you have a student that hasn't logged in for a week? Have the system send them a check-in email.
- Do you have a deadline approaching and lots of missing work? Have the system send a reminder to complete email.
- Did a student score poorly on an assignment or quiz? Have the system send an email with some study tips or ways to recover.
Check out the new pre-built templates that you can copy paste to create these automatic reminders.

Work-To-Do Widget (August)
The work-to-do widget appears one the home page for students. It shows them a list of assignments for all of their courses. In order for this feature to work properly, it is important for faculty to assign a due date when creating assignments.
