"Bytes" From Your School Leader, Dr. Townsend
February 23, 2024
Greetings Phalen Virtual Leadership Academy Families,
Happy Friday! Happy Black History Month! What a wonderful Week 29 at PLA Virtual! Is it just me, or are you in awe as to how we just had 3-4 inches of snow last weekend and sunshine with a high of 51 degrees today. Please be sure to still use caution when outside (don't ditch your jacket, scarf, hat), as this is prime weather for sickness to fester, as the temperatures are not aligned to reduce germs.
Are you ready for the Science Fair? I am excited to see scholar projects, as I know many have been working extremely hard to prepare. We are excited to see their research in action. We hope this is the start of another PLA Annual tradition.
Do you know your scholar test location for SAT (ALL High School JUNIORS) and I-READ (Elementary) the week of March 4, 2024? If not, please contact our State Testing Coordinator, Ms. Sepaniak at csepaniak@phalenacademies.org.
Join us on Facebook and click the "like" button to follow and see all the many great things happening at PLA Virtual.
We look forward to seeing your scholar(s) on Monday, February 26, 2024 at 8:35am for Week 30 at PLA Virtual!
With Gratitude,
Dr. Townsend, Principal
This Black History Month and always, we would like to remind scholars and staff to LEAD WITH LOVE like John Lewis!
Growing up in the South during a time when Black people did not have the same rights as white people, John Lewis faced racial discrimination—and he did not like it. He fought for equality during the Civil Rights Movement, marching with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., against oppression and risking his life for justice.
Through grit and determination, he went from sitting on bus seats as an act of civil disobedience during the Freedom Rides to sitting in the halls of Congress as a champion for civil liberties.

We’re In The Home Stretch!!!
As schools, parents and scholars are contending with the increasingly
unavoidable truth about persistent learning loss, data points to a key
source of the problem: Scores of students have in recent years missed so
much school that catching up seems nearly impossible.
Don’t fret!! Stay the Course
Even if your school year attendance was not the greatest and you fell
behind as a result, there are still resources that you can take advantage of
to help you finish the year strong.:
1. Talk to teachers and school counselors about what can be done to
catch up on some work
2. Ask about summer programs that may be available to help start the
upcoming school year on track
3. Open up and seek help with any issues in your life that may be
causing extra stress and interfering with your attendance
