"Pain.Pill.Problem" - next steps
LONG-TERM GOALS
· Open up access to insurance coverage / reimbursement
· Create employment and referral networks with Hospitals & Clinic systems
· Increase consumer awareness, education, resources and alternatives available for pain management
TARGETED APPROACH:
· Contact health insurance board members, executives, and other professionals of influence
- Health Partners
- Blue Cross / Shield
- Medica
· Continue to advocate with legislators using this as key talking point
- Franken
- Klobchard
- Emmer
· Press releases, advertising, social media campaigns
- Utilize some of our practitioners who are currently pain specialist and who are actively engaged in this process for press release /media examples
- Identify low-cost advertising options to increase public awareness
- Focus on: “Got pain? Get Acupuncture!” message
STRATEGIES
1) Send a letter thanking all the presenters and remind them nondrug therapies such as acupuncture should be part of the solution, but access to care for acute and chronic conditions is impacted by coverage. We also want to see more acupuncturists in the Emergency room.
2) Issue a press release that as a profession we recognize the problem and wish to continue with the dialogue and having access to nondrug therapies such as acupuncture for both acute and chronic pain should be at the top of the list for those with addiction problems and those wanting to avoid a potentially addicting drugs.
3) Schedule meetings with and educating police, lawyers, prosecuting attorneys, mental health facilities, drug and alcohol addiction treatment centers, AA and other addiction support groups, governors office, senator Franken and Klobchard, Congressman Emmer and others that there are nondrug options to treat pain. List the problems of access to care by poor coverage and discrimination of providers.
4) Create an ad campaign and go to the prescribers.
Example "prescriptions for acupuncture and not opiates for pain. Help reduce the opiate epidemic. Contact you local Acupuncturist today." Create prescription pads for the prescribers. Literally the doctors don't know what to do. They do not have time to talk to patients they ultimately want to help them get out of pain. Showing them the data from the ER study Penny George has done is great information to use. Doctors don't know what to do. They need options. We are that option.

Licensed acupuncturists in Minnesota are nationally board certified medical practitioners, licensed by the Board of Medical Practice.
- Acupuncture is the insertion of any solid core needle into the body that is intended to elicit a therapeutic response.
- No other professional is as highly trained in all strategies for using acupuncture than a Licensed Acupuncturist.
- Acupuncture has been proven to effectively treat acute and chronic health conditions and diseases. It is less expensive and less invasive than many other standards of care.
- Acupuncturists are one of the only medical professionals trained in true preventive care including nutrition and lifestyle practices.
- The expertise of acupuncturists is highly recognized and they are being integrated by the top medical facilities in the country including serving our troops in our military hospitals.
- The Joint Commission recognizes acupuncture as a more effective resource for pain management than drug therapy.
The Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Association of Minnesota (AOMAM) is a non-profit, professional organization of Licensed Acupuncturists who are dedicated to promoting the benefits of Acupuncture to all Minnesotans. We are educating our representatives and advocating for safe and affordable holistic healthcare via acupuncture.
HERE’S WHERE YOU COME IN! Your donation will help AOMAM do the following:
- Educate the public on the distinct benefits that only acupuncturists are trained to provide
- Ensure that patients are treated safely and effectively by Licensed Acupuncturists.
- Ensure acupuncture is covered by insurance companies to make it affordable for all acute and chronic conditions.
- Enable state representatives and professional colleagues to better understand that qualified integrative medical resources are available for better patient care today!
Make healthcare more accessible for you and your family! Make a donation today to help us reach our goal! Thank you.

Acupuncture Now Foundation - On Amazon Smile!
Just wanted to let people know that our love of Amazon online shopping could (also) go towards supporting the "Acupuncture Now Foundation".
Remember, if you want Amazon to donate to Acupuncture Now Foundation Inc, you need to start each shopping session at the URL http://smile.amazon.com, and we will donate 0.5% of the price of your eligible purchases.
Perhaps, AOMAM should look into this as well to help us reach our fundraising goals...
