Historical Society of Helotes
AUGUST 2018
NEXT GENERAL MEETING
DATE: Tuesday, September 4, 2018 • 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
LOCATION: Gardens at Old Town Helotes
15060 Antonio Drive, Helotes, TX
GUEST SPEAKER: Juan S. Garcia, Secretary, The Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas
PRESENTATION: "How the Lipan Apache Used the Buffalo"
Juan Garcia, a descendant of Lipan Apaches, will give a presentation on how his ancestors used buffalo. Dressed in full Apache regalia, he will show us the tools, weapons, and other artifacts the tribe made from buffalo. According to Mr. Garcia, the buffalo was a walking “Wal-Mart” for the Lipan Apaches.
Helotes was once a seasonal agricultural camp for the nomadic Lipan Apaches. Around 1723, the Tribe came into contact with Spanish woodcutters at "Elotes Pass," an area named by the Spaniards for the corn they found growing there. This corn was most likely planted by the Lipans. The Tribe maintained a presence in the area until about the mid-1850's.
Garcia is a resident of Corpus Christi, Texas. He has given presentations to schools, retirement homes, and other places for more than 20 years. Since his retirement from Occidental Chemical Corporation in 2014, he also volunteers at the Texas State Aquarium and St. Peter's Catholic Church. For the last six years, Garcia has been secretary of the Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas. Visit the group's website at www.lipanapache.org.
