Mnemonics

Why i am interested..
Mnemonics sounded interesting to me because having many tests and quizzes to study for, i could use all the help i can get! I can remember many times that my teachers showed us mnemonics to help us remember anything. They really stick with me, considering i can still remember the country's in South America mnemonic from the sixth grade, id say the work pretty well!
They are used to remember anything from how many days are in each month
to remembering the metric system
or even the planets!
What is a mnemonic?
A mnemonic is a learning technique to help our brains retain info easier. Mnemonics aim to translate information into something that the brain can remember easier than its original form.
Mnemonics
Whats going on in the brain when we learn a Mnemonic?
Those who learned and remembered showed increased activity in the occipito-parietal cortex and left retroplenial cortex also known as the parts of the brain that deal with mental visualization. Your brain is remembering the funny sentence instead of the boring info, helping you remember. Your brain tends to remember fun images or sentences opposed to boring sentences talking about what info you should be retaining.
Who discovered mnemonics?
Powerful mnemonic properties were discovered by the Greek poet , Simonides. Numerous research studies have shown the amazing potential of mnemonics with experimental content, such as vocabulary lists and brief lists of facts (Experiments like studying different ages and how they effect the brain at different ages)
You might find this interesting...
Elderly people have a harder time remembering the mnemonic and tend to do worse after they learn one. Studies have showed that having to remember funny words to remember the important phrase or order makes it harder to remember what the actual phrase they are trying to remember is.
