"Reach Every Student Every Day"

First Days of School

We had a WONDERFUL first two days of school last week and are looking forward to finding our routine this upcoming week, although it be a short week as well! It was great to see the kids and get to hear all about their summer vacations, most of which agreed that it went way too fast! Below, you will see pictures from some of the activities we did these first two days of school. One activity was a "breakout" - similar to an escape room activity - where the students had to crack the codes to get the final key to unlock the box. They all did great and all solved the challenges to get the box unlocked before time was up! I was proud of how hard they worked even when the challenges got a little tricky. They worked really well in their groups too, which was wonderful!

Upcoming Dates/Notes

  • August 30th - No School
  • September 2nd - No School

*Please return any forms that need to be returned to the office by Monday! Most of the children have returned all of the necessary forms, but please double check their folders.

*I also sent home a yellow paper for the kids to fill out at Unpack Your Backpack Night last Tuesday. I am missing a couple of those as well.

*The 5th graders will be expected to bring home their folders and planners every night and bring them back to school every morning. In their planners, there is a spot for you to write me a note and to initial it each day. This will be an important tool for you to help with communication between school and home. Students will write their assignments in their planners every day and before they are dismissed from school, I will help them circle any homework they might have and sign the planner. I also encourage each child to bring a book home to read in the evenings. I understand that some nights get busy, but it is very important that they spend a few minutes every day doing some reading! Fifth graders are still expected to take AR tests on the books that they read.

*We have a new Reading curriculum this year, so Spelling will look a little different. We do not have any of the workbooks like we did in the past, so there will be some different spelling assignments than in the previous years. We will plan on a spelling test on the last day of each week, typically Friday. We will have our first spelling test on Thursday of this upcoming week. A list was sent home on Friday and it should remain in their folders at all times so they always have a list at home and at school. I encourage you to help your child study their words throughout the week. They can also utilize Spelling City at home for extra practice.

*I sent home a NEW Remind code. I needed to change the group/code that was sent home earlier in the week, so please join my new one ASAP to be included in important texts that will be sent throughout the school year. You can join our class by clicking on this link here,, or else you will find the new information below. Thank you!

Book Orders

Periodically, I will be sending home Scholastic book orders for your family to look over. It is not by any means required that you order books. If you are interested in ordering books, you can send the order form and a check (payable to Scholastic) with your child to school. You can also order online as well using our class code HY289. There is a wider selection online, and you can earn free books when you order online with special promo codes that they only offer to online orders. The website is: Online orders can be placed anytime. I will send a note home with the flyers for when I want them returned.
