Academic Infomation
Math
We have completed Units 1-3 for quarter 1!
Students took the county quarterly math assessment this week.
Next week, we will begin Unit 4 (Extending Understanding of Fraction Equivalence and Order).
Click here for the Unit 4 Family Newsletter.
Math intervention has begun. Click on your child's teacher to find out about intervention in that math class.
Math Facts
Has your child shown mastery of any math facts yet? How many levels has your child completed? Has (s)he earned the addition or subtraction triangle for the class quilt?
Get those math facts moving- make flash cards, download an app, play a math fact car game - students who know their math facts can concentrate more on math concepts and problem solving. Make a goal and work toward achieving that goal regarding math facts.
Language Arts
- Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
- Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words or phrases in a text relevant to a grade 4 topic or subject area.
- Describe the overall structure (e.g., chronology, comparison, cause/effect, problem, solution) of events, ideas, concepts, or information in a text or part of a text.
- Interpret information presented visually, orally, or quantitatively (e.g., in charts, graphs, diagrams, time lines, animations, or interactive elements on Web pages) and explain how the information contributes to an understanding of the text in which it appears.
Science
We are completing/finalizing our Maryland Geography unit by putting our final touches on our Maryland 3-D Relief Maps.
While we have been working on the Maryland Maps, we have started our Science unit; Inside out, Outside in. We have started to learn about the external and internal structures of plants and animals. As a culminating project, we will create and build an animal applying the knowledge we learned about external and internal structures. Send in those small recyclables (small bottles, small boxes such as shoeboxes or cereal boxes, cardboard, etc.).
Vocabulary words to ask your child:
- stem
- leaves
- roots
- flower

Newsela
Give it a try - it's a great way to maintain their reading strategies when they are home sick or on a snow day/delay as well as the weekend.
Ten Marks / Common Core
Has your child accessed his/her account lately?
This is another great way to maintain your child's math skills when home sick or on a snow day/delay or the weekend.
Parents can also create a parent account in order to be able to see how their child is doing. Ask you child's teacher if you need more information regarding how to create the parent account.
