NES MOUNTAIN MEMO
May 5, 2023
Message from Principal Melamed
05/05/23
Dear Nederland Community,
Today was the first day of SHRED Mountain Bike. The 3rd graders participated in a full day of mountain biking with coaches from SMBA, bikes provided by Peak to Peak Endurance, snacks provided by Skratch, and support from Tin Shed. It was an amazing day for all and another example of the cool and unique opportunities students have at Nederland Elementary. Remember that the 4th grade has their SHRED Mountain Bike Day next Friday the 12th, and the 5th grade has their day on Friday, May 19th.
Another very cool event this week was Career Week. Throughout the week students were exposed to a variety of careers from bee keeper to nurse to excavator to park ranger. The workshops were hands-on, personal, and inspiring. I hope your child came home excited about the possibility of exploring a variety of careers. Thank you to Ms. Kristen and all the parents that volunteered their time to offer insights and inspiration to our students.
I also want to remind everyone of the school/neighborhood clean-up scheduled this Sunday from 1:00 - 3:00. Snacks will be provided by the Nederland Lion’s Club. Please consider stopping by the school to help clean the school and neighborhood area.
Finally please put May 19th on your calendar for the annual school carnival. This flier has all the details.
We are wrapping up the year in a very busy and fun way! I hope to see you all at some or all of these events.
That’s it for this week and as always please feel free to reach out with any questions.
Best,
Caleb

BVSD PreSchool Enrichment – BVSD PreSchool Enrichment Program at Nederland Elementary is enjoying the warmer weather and spending more time outside and learning about the outdoor environment. This month we learned all about the ocean, the animals that live in the ocean, and the different kinds of weather/ environments in the ocean. In the final weeks of April, we are learning about plants, gardens, and nutritious fruits and vegetables that we can grow.
As the weather starts warming up please ensure you send a water bottle each day for your child to stay hydrated while playing outside! Also as you know the spring in Colorado often has all seasons so snow gear, raincoats, and long sleeve shirts may also still be needed as we will get outside each day. Please let us know if you need support getting any of these items as we have an extensive collection of all kinds of clothing for weather necessary.
The PSE and IPK programs will be closed this Friday, April 21st, and Monday, April 24th, returning on the 25th of April. We will also be offering parent-teacher conferences on May 5th, 2023, between 8:00 AM- 4:00 PM, please let Ms. Jessa or Ms. Heather know if you would like to schedule a conference.
If you have any questions or concerns about the Preschool Enrichment Program, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Jessa, PSE Supervisor at jessica.meyers@bvsd.org or Heather, PSE Assistant Supervisor heather.g.jackson@bvsd.org. Thank you!

Students are completing their Social Emotional lessons for the year. They have practiced focusing their attention, controlling their impulses, identifying their emotions and needs, verbalizing their inner worlds & asserting themselves, recognizing their strengths and challenges, managing their big emotions and behavior, listening to diverse perspectives and experiences, empathizing with others, solving problems, making amends, and making respectful choices. Assessments of SEL skills will occur over the next few weeks. Thank you for reinforcing these life skills at home with your child! Together, we are raising whole human beings!

The monthly Mountain Strong Families Series will return next September! It teaches parenting skills for supporting our child's social-emotional development. Here's what this year's attendees are saying about the monthly Nurturing Parenting Series:
- I want to do this again next year! Each time I take away a new idea or practice to use with my children.
- My life is easier due to this class. I am a happier parent because I'm using these helpful tools.
- This Series thankfully taught me a different approach to parenting than the one I was raised with.
- This is the first time I felt validated for how hard a job it is to be a parent.
- The feeling of community among the parents is incredible!
- Our friends across the country are amazed that we have this Parenting Series (hosted by TEENS, Inc and held at NES).
