NEW COLLEGE BOARD OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIPS!
Katy ISD has joined a national effort to encourage students to sign up for the College Board Opportunity Scholarships program, a first-of-its-kind scholarship program that lays out six important steps on the path to college. By completing each step, students will earn a chance for scholarships ranging from $500 to $2,000. Students who complete all six steps are eligible for $40,000 scholarships to be awarded in March of their senior year.
Unlike typical scholarship programs, College Board Opportunity Scholarships don’t require an essay or application, and the program doesn’t have a minimum GPA or SAT® score requirement. Rather, it rewards students’ actions on their way to college, making it open to all students. The more actions students take, the more chances they have to earn a scholarship. All students can earn opportunities for scholarships by completing any or all of the following six steps:
- Building a college list: students get started by exploring colleges they’re interested in
- Practicing for the SAT: students use Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy®
- Improving SAT scores: students show how practice pays off by improving their scores
- Strengthening their college list: students make sure their list has a mix of safety, match, and reach schools
- Completing the FAFSA®: students fill out the free government form to apply for financial aid
- Applying to colleges: students apply to the colleges they want to attend
College Board has made a $25 million commitment to creating a clearer path to college for all students through this program and 4,000 students over the next five years can earn scholarships.
High school juniors and seniors can visit cb.org/opportunity to learn more about the College Board Opportunity Scholarships program and sign up.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS. All day, Every day!
Ram Students and Parents!
Do you know how much attendance matters? Students that miss school miss out on multiple opportunities each day, have lower grades, and can become disconnected.
- Students with more than 3 absences per class period will not be able to exempt from thier exams this semester.
- Students that miss more than 9 days of any one class will have to complete make up time to avoid losing their course credit - even with passing grades.
- Students that receive unexcused absences will be placed on an Attendance Improvement Plan and could face truancy court.
Here are a few important reminders also!
- When students miss school for illness or appointments, documentation must be submitted to the attendance office within 3 school days to excuse the absence.
- When students miss class, it is their responsibility to talk with their teacher to get missed work.
- If a student comes late, they must sign in through the attendance office no matter what time they enter the building to avoid an unexcused absence and potential disciplinary consequences.
- If a student needs to leave early, they must sign out through attendance to avoid an unexcused absence and potential disciplinary consequences.
- MCHS is a closed campus - students may not leave campus for lunch. Students that do so will face disciplinary consequences and could potentially lose their parking privilege.

Human Trafficking Awareness
Katy ISD Partners with AHA
Katy ISD and the American Heart Association, the world’s leading nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health, have partnered to build awareness around the dangers of vaping.
The number of teens who vape has more than doubled in just the past two years, to five million, according to the 2019 National Youth Tobacco Survey. More than one in four high school students report vaping.
In addition, e-cigarettes can contain unusually high levels of nicotine – in fact, one e-cigarette pod can contain as much nicotine as an entire pack of cigarettes. Youth who vape are particularly susceptible to nicotine addiction, which rewires the developing brain.
Help spread the word using Katy ISD’s hashtag: #QuitLyingAboutVaping and consider signing the AHA letter to hold Big Vape accountable.
