Transition to Hybrid: A Day in the Life of a Student at Emmitsburg Elementary School!
Hybrid Learning Model
Updates:
Earlier this month, FCPS shared an updated plan for the implementation of a hybrid learning model for students. Currently, we will be moving forward with that plan.
In this updated plan, school based staff will be returning to buildings on Wednesday, January 27. Students are expected to return as part of an in-person hybrid model on Tuesday, February 16. To provide time for our instructional teams to transition to the hybrid model, Wednesday, February 3, and Wednesday, February 10, will be asynchronous learning days.
"I feel confident about our hybrid model and we are looking forward to welcoming students back into our school buildings," FCPS Superintendent Dr. Terry Alban said. "We just need the right health metrics in place to make this happen."
We have been preparing for the hybrid model for a long time, and we look forward to welcoming students back to our schools. We are confident in our hybrid model, which follows all guidance from the Frederick County Health Department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The mitigation strategies that we are implementing: facial coverings, social distancing, and frequent hand washing continue to be successful in limiting the spread of COVID-19. It is critically important that all staff and students adhere to these protocols.
We are excited to move to this next step in returning students to our school buildings!
Hybrid Learning Information
Hybrid Learning - Students will be assigned to either an A cohort (Monday and Tuesday) or a B cohort (Thursday and Friday). Assignment letters will be emailed to each family no later than February 1st.
Each cohort will attend school two days a week for in-person instruction and three days virtual. All students will receive an average of 3.5 hours of “synchronous” instruction or time with the teacher each day. Independent work will also be assigned. The instructional day is a total of 5 hours (8:45am-1:45pm). Arrival will take place from 8:15-8:45am and dismissal will occur from 1:45-2:15 pm daily.
*** FCPS staff will work hard to minimize changes to student schedules. However, as we move into the new semester with a new learning model, it is possible a child's teacher may change. ***.

Staffing Update
As I'm sure you can imagine, replacing such a legendary teacher is no easy task. As we search for a new media specialist for the 2021-22 school year, our beloved Mrs. Moore will be serving in the role of long term substitute effective February 16th. In the meantime, Ms. Deniel, our resident substitute, will support us until Mrs. Moore begins.

Mental Health Matters
We have faced so many unexpected challenges in 2020 due to the global health crisis. As a result, FCPS is introducing mental health resources for students, staff, and the community.
- The new Mental Health Matters webpage offers a variety of resources, including videos, activities, and contacts.
- FCPS will be sharing Wellness Wednesday social media posts with a mental health focus.
As we continue navigating challenging times, it is more important than ever to focus on mental health.
