Upcoming Week: Reader's Workshop
Looking at other peoples' perspective or point of view is something that isn't so easy sometimes. We are relating this to our reading next week. We will be reading books and looking at the point of view of all the characters in the stories. We will also look at how and why point of views change, usually through events in the story that open character's eyes.
Wax Museum:
Students will also be practicing their speeches. Please be sure to send the speeches to school each day so we can rehearse. That practice will make perfect. Thursday is our wax museum, both during the school day and after. During school, students will perform to 2nd graders. This allows second graders to see what they will do next year, and it gives our kids a chance to practice for Thursday night. I encourage students to dress up as their character and bring props that would help the role come to life. If you are having a difficult time with this, please let me know. Also, some kids have asked if they can make a poster to go along with their presentation. Yes! If they would like to, that would be great. Thursday night's performances start at 6:00. Please have your student in the classroom at 5:45. We will get everyone set up and ready to go. Thanks!
Upcoming Week: Writer's Workshop
Students are finishing up with their persuasive letters. Some of you may have received 'mail' from your child. Others will get their mail early this week as students finish with their letters. This week, students will do a few short writes to continue to practice persuasion. They will also have their post assessment on this unit.
Young Author progress: We are motoring on the Young Author books. Most students are almost done writing all of their rough drafts. From there, they are editing and adding details to make it grab readers attention. Some have asked if they can bring their books home to work. I like to keep the books and young author writing at school. I do this for one reason. I want the writing and story to be completely the child's writing. If I get worried that your child won't get their book done on time, then I may send it home for a night. If this happens, please just have them spend time working on the book. Please do not 'fix' it for them. Their voice and writing style is what makes these books unique and absolutely wonderful! Thanks!
Upcoming Week: Math Workshop
This week we will finish our 2nd multiplication and division unit (unit 7). Students will review on Monday and take a quiz on Tuesday. The study guide will come home on Monday night so you can look over it with them. The biggest part of this unit is knowing their multiplication facts in order to solve problems. Some kids are still learning their facts. This is ok. They know other ways to get the answers to the problems. However, knowing their multiplication facts is still very important. Please keep studying them at home. Homework this week will again be a math fact log and a reading log.
After break we will dive into a fraction review and explore deeper with equivalent fractions, fractions greater than one, and comparing fractions.
