From Mr. Clemente
Dear Winter Park Band families,
Welcome to the penultimate Newsletter of the 2019-2020 school year!
As we quickly approach the end of the 2019-2020 school year, I'd like to take the opportunity to thank all of our Band families for a wonderful, although unfortunately cut short, school year. Since I began teaching at Winter Park HS seven years ago, I have been able to witness what a friendly and supportive community we have both at our school as well as in the Winter Park community as a whole. This community is the reason why WPHS is such a great place to be, and allows all of our students to have the amazing opportunities they do year in and year out. THANK YOU ALL for your continued support of our Band students and their families, and for making the Winter Park Band family a great place to be!
It was wonderful to see all of the students and parents this past week during our uniform and equipment return. One of the most difficult parts of Distance Learning is just that, the distance from colleagues, friends, and peers. It did the heart good to be able to say hello in person (at a safe distance, of course) and check in with everyone to see how they and their families were. I very much hope that we can all be together to make music again soon, an opportunity and outlet that can definitely not be taken for granted.
This Wednesday, May 20 the Band room will be open for rising 9th - 12th grade students to check out instruments for summer practice. As with last week's uniform return, please wear a face covering while on campus and practice physical distancing while inside the Band room.
Join the Band Video: Thank you to our Band President, Charlie Schmitt, for organizing and putting together a "Join The Band" video found below in the newsletter. Please share the video however you are able!
Current High School Students (rising 10th - 12th graders) - Please check both your Google Classroom and Skyward accounts. You have only this week and two days next week to complete assignments for the 4th quarter so they can be graded before I must submit grades to the administration. If you have any incomplete work, please promptly complete and submit it. If you have completed work that has not yet been graded on Skyward, please email both Mr. Clemente and Mr. Smith to alert us in case we have either missed it or not yet been able to grade your work.
Les Miserables Recording: For anyone unfamiliar with the music of Les Miserables, the long -standing Broadway production from which the music for next year's marching band show is taken, check out this video of a performance from the 10th Anniversary Concert - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0c2sx47p31M.
I hope you continue to stay healthy and safe,
Mr. Clemente

From the Band Booster President
Hello band families. Thank you to everyone who attended, planned, and participated in the first virtual band banquet ever! Congratulations to our wonderful seniors and all of the fantastic and dedicated band students. It was fun to celebrate a wonderful year virtually if we could not be together in person.
A special word of thanks this year to the Band Booster Board, which has been so supportive of all things bandJ It takes a dedicated team, so a very special thanks to Mary Bernard, Stacey Cox, Lori Gavin, Keith Gavin, Mary Beth Johnston, Melanie Maulfair, Jay McPherson, Kimberly Mueller, Ana Nazarian, Heather Ribaric, Sara Robinson, Kim Schmitt, and Beth Visconti for all of their hard work and tireless support this year!! Thank you also to all of the other extremely dedicated parent volunteers, who have given their time, positivity, and energy to the band program. We could not do it without you, and you are all appreciated! Please be on the lookout for next year’s Band Booster Board information/election form (we usually do that at registration night) or email. There will also be information about vacancies if you are interested in filling a role next year.
It’s hard to believe the year is almost over, but please stay tuned for information on next year’s calendar. Don’t forget to check the Charms calendar regularly and subscribe to that calendar so it updates automatically on your calendar (directions on the website) if you are interested. Have a great week everyone. Happy Mother’s Day!

FINANCIALS
For a description of the Band fair share, as well as any other charges throughout the school year, please consult the 2019-2020 Band Handbook. Earlier this year (beyond the pandemic), WPHS had already purchased uniforms, hired professional staff, as well as purchased classroom and event resources, so your payment not only fulfills your obligation, but also ensures the continued viability of our program.
TOTAL BALANCE DUE indicates the amount a student owes on the account. CREDIT BALANCE indicates a surplus of funds. Credits can be saved for future Band fair share, expenses, trips, etc. If you have fundraising credits or a credit under the “Student Miscellaneous Ledger” in your account and would like it applied to a specific item, then please use CHARMS to submit a Transfer Request. This alerts us to apply the money to that specific charge. Please note that partial payments cannot be applied to an item until after full payment is received.
Please direct any questions to both Mr. Clemente at michael.clemente@ocps.net and Mary Beth Johnston at mbkjohnston@gmail.com. If you need a reminder regarding "what is due and when," you will find it on the Band's website at www.winterparkhsband.com > Resources > Forms > Registration Forms 2019-2020 and in each week's newsletter.
Finally, we certainly recognize that this is a difficult time for everyone. If you have financial concerns, please reach out immediately with a description so we can evaluate our scholarship resources. We want to work with you, but you must communicate. Thanks for your communication and understanding!
Viewing your Student's Financial Account in Charms:
There is a direct link to Charms in "Quick Links" on the band website.
- Our school code is winterparkhsband
- The Student Area Password would be a unique password that either the student or parent have set up. (If you don't know the password it can be reset by one of the band directors).
- Once you have logged into the Student Area, click on the round, red $ symbol on the top menu bar to view your student's account
- If your student has earned Band Account Credit (in the Miscellaneous Ledger) this credit can be transferred to pay for many band fees: Fair Share, School Instrument Maintenance, Registration Fees for All-State, All-County and Solo Ensemble.
Requesting a Credit Transfer to pay for Fixed Payments Due:
- Click on the "Transfer Request" tab just below the round, red $ symbol. Select the fixed payment you would like to pay for using the credit. The request is sent to the band directors and the band booster treasurer.
- SENIORS: Please check your credit balance and use it accordingly during the year. Credit for Seniors left at the end of the year can only be transferred to siblings.

WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS
Thank you to all of the students who have been diligent in keeping up with the weekly assignments. Mr. Smith and I know that there are many new challenges and seemingly constant changes that come with being at home and completing your classwork for all 7 classes each week. Now especially with all of your classes being held digitally for the remainder of the school year, it is even more important that you do not procrastinate and allow late work to build up. Students should be reading the newsletter weekly, as well as checking Google Classroom at least once per day.
If you are struggling to complete your work when assignments are due, please do not hesitate to reach out. We are here to help you! An issue with internet connectivity or other emergencies at home do not affect your grade, so long as there is communication with the Directors.
This is all very much different than "normal school," and especially for us in Band class when we can't all get together and be an ensemble as our class is meant to operate. In the meantime, the skills you are individually building through the digital assignments will become incredibly useful to you as a musician and help the Band as a whole. Always keep in mind, "a rising tide raises all boats".
