School Safety & ALICE at MPCS
In 2013, Manassas Park City Schools adopted enhanced safety procedures that we, as well as the experts across the country, believe increase the chance of survival should an armed intruder enter our schools. These enhanced procedures provide our staff and students additional response options by utilizing the ALICE protocol approach. Conducting violent intruder/lockdown drills are required, just like fire and tornado drills, by all Virginia Public Schools several times a year. Staff members participate in ALICE training every year in order to help students learn and remember the response options during designated lesson & activity drills. Age appropriate lessons & activities are developed by ALICE-trained educators and conducted during pre-designated months during the school year which include August, September & February. The age-appropriate lessons and drills are designed to encourage awareness and develop skills for responding to different situations without causing undue stress or fear for students. Emphasis is placed on awareness, being alert to surroundings and informing adults of potential concerns as well as enhancing traditional lockdown procedures with barricading and being aware of the evacuation rally points for each campus. Surprise ALICE drills and drills involving the simulation of a weapon are never conducted as part of the student lessons; all school staff are always aware of and are an active part in all ALICE lessons & drills at each school. Additional resources and more information can be found on the MPCS School Safety webpage at https://www.mpark.net/page-3/school-safety.
NOTE: MPHS will be conducting an ALICE drill on Thursday, March 1st during Cougar Time. If you have any questions about this process, please contact Dr. Bergeron.
