International Festival
West High School Commons
If you recall in 2013 our troop represented France at the International Festival with a pink poodle themed table. Our table took home 1st place in both Best Decorated and Best Food! The International Festival is back again in 2014 and this year we will be representing...(drumroll please)...the PHILIPPINES!
I jumped on the opportunity to sign up early and made an executive decision to host the Philippines so we can start planning our table right away. I already have a collection of Philippine made items in my home and borrowed a couple traditional Philippine dresses from my mom. We even have an official Girl Scout uniform from the Philippines to display!
This year a new feature is being added to the festivities- Dancing! The girls are learning the steps to a traditional Philippine folk dance called Tinikling. Tinikling involves two people beating, tapping, and sliding bamboo poles on the ground and against each other in coordination with one or more dancers who step over and in between the poles in a dance. Sounds confusing? Try performing it! There are 5 main steps in Tinikling. The girls learned two steps at the meeting last Thursday. It proved to be a bit challenging with a few feet getting caught between poles, but by the end of the night many of the girls got the hang of it. Success in Tinilking comes down to rhythm and knowing the steps. If they have free time at home they should continue practicing the steps. The online tutorial we are using is here or can be reached by typing vimeo.com/15776029 in your url.
To continue preparing for the Fest, next month we will finish up learning the rest of the dance steps for TIniking. I will have some Filipino food prepared so we can decide what food we will share, as well as, have materials ready to make SWAPs.
She 'n Me SPAjama Party
Community of Christ Church, 2790 Hwy K, O'Fallon, MO
Our troop is hosting our first ever Neighborhood Event! Registered Girl Scouts and adult female figures in our G.S. Neighborhood will be invited to an evening of Spa-like fun and pampering. Our troop will be participating in this event, not as invited guests, but as WORKERS. We are "running the show", which means we are responsible for all the organizing, planning, and implementing the activities. At our December sleepover, the girls did a great job putting together Spa-themed activities, testing them and evaluating the results. Based on those evaluations, we were able to determine which activities were going to work well for our event, which activities needed some re-working, and which ones, unfortunately, did not make the cut. I have narrowed it down to 8 planned stations/activities and have devised an initial budget for this event.
The flyer and registration forms for the SPAjama Party are currently undergoing approval. Once it is approved, registration will be open and flyers will be distributed. Once registration closes in February, we will have a better idea on the number of participants, actual budget we will be working with, and can continue with planning and preparations. We will need to add another meeting or two February and March to prepare ourselves for this event. I will contact you when those dates have been scheduled.

She 'n Me SPAjama Party March 28
Set up 5:00 Event: 6:30-8:30 Tear Down: Until done
This is our troop sponsored Neighborhood Event. I need as many (all!) adults to help out if they are available. My goal is to have one girl and one adult at each station. Volunteers will help set up, tear down, and supervise one activity station. If you can only help out for a portion of the time that it fine, too. Let me know if you can help- no tagalongs please. I will have an adult only training meeting in March. I'm thinking its time for a {insert name of favorite restaurant here} night!
