New Standard Response Protocol
What's New: This summer, district and school staff implemented Standard Response Protocol (SRP) actions that are consistent across all District 196 schools.
How Does it Work?
- SRP ensures consistent language and responses for various school-day situations.
- SRP is used nationwide and is provided free by the I Love U Guys Foundation.
- Local police representatives trained with district staff last year and assisted with SRP implementation.
- The five SRP actions: HOLD, SECURE, LOCKDOWN, EVACUATE, and SHELTER.
- AVHS will conduct a drill using this protocol after homecoming.

How to Get Involved & Support AVHS
Did you know that when families are actively involved in their child's school, students tend to be more engaged and have better academic outcomes? Despite the challenges brought by the pandemic, AVHS has consistently fostered strong family-school partnerships that contribute to our overall success.
Get involved! Join AVHS's SITE COUNCIL and/or support various school activities throughout the year. You can also explore volunteer opportunities to assist teachers and school staff by filling out THIS FORM.
Parking Lot: Student Drop Off & Pick Up
How it Works:
· ALWAYS enter from the entrance on the south end of the lot.
· Use the RIGHT Lane as pickup/drop-off along the curb.
· Use the LEFT Lane as a THRU LANE ONLY.
· School starts at 7:40 am.
Please note that if your student is not IN THE PARKING LOT by 7:30 am, it is unlikely they will be on time to 1st period.
Yearbooks
The Apple Valley High School 2022-2023 Yearbooks are here!
- Yearbooks not yet picked up will be distributed in Advisory.
- A limited number of 2023 yearbooks are still available for sale.
- Please contact kristin.blatzheim@district196.org if you'd like to order a 2022-23 yearbook.
2023-2024 Yearbooks are now on sale!
- Purchase your yearbook by clicking the Jostens box on our website (https://avhs.district196.org/families/yearbook-information).
- Yearbooks are at their cheapest price early in the year; order now and save!
- The 2024 yearbook class is busy covering the year’s events in sports, arts, clubs/activities, student life, and more!
- If you have a story idea for the yearbook, please email Kristin.blatzheim@district196.org.
AVHS yearbooks will continue to be a summer delivery for the 2023-2024 school year.
- Yearbooks will arrive in late July and be ready for pick up in August.
- A summer delivery helps ensure better representation of students in the book by allowing spring sports, Prom, Graduation, and other spring activities to be printed in the bound book.
- High school yearbooks are printed with a colored hard copy cover, and 220 colored pages.
- The price set by Jostens reflects the high quality and content of a high school yearbook (a more long-lasting publication than an elementary or middle school yearbook.)
2024 Seniors may elect to submit a portrait to be used in the yearbook rather than use their Lifetouch School picture.
- All pictures must be submitted by December 1st, 2023 and must be of a professional quality with a high resolution.
- Pictures should be a shoulders-up "headshot"
- No props, hats, stickers, or filters
- Yearbook advisors reserve the right to reject any picture submitted that does not fit the above standards and ask for an alternate option.
- Pictures submitted after December 1st, risk not being included in the book due to necessary deadlines imposed by our yearbook company, Jostens.
- If a student does not submit a senior picture, their Lifetouch school picture will be used in the book.
If you are looking for an old AVHS yearbook, we have old books for sale! See the link on the AVHS website Yearbook Info page of previous year’s books to see how many we have of each year and the current price.

In March 2023, the Minnesota Free School Meals bill was signed into law. This provides all students in District 196 one breakfast and one lunch each school day at no charge.
A la carte items including snacks, beverages, and second entrees, are available to purchase in our schools. Students who wish to purchase a la carte items must have a positive balance in their Nutrition Services account.

HOW IT WORKS:
- The application must be completed every year.
- The form only takes three to four minutes to complete
- Complete THE APPLICATION HERE
THE BIG PICTURE: Families who qualify also benefit by receiving...
- Discounted participation fees for AVHS athletic teams, and arts/activities programs
- Discounted academic test fees (ACT, AP, PSAT, SAT)
- Discounted college application fees
- Discounted transportation fee-for-service fees
- Discounted iPad protection Plan fees

iPad Protection Plan for 23-24
WHY IT MATTERS: District 196 offers an optional Protection Plan to families for $20 per iPad to cover the cost of potential theft and damage throughout the school year.
HOW IT WORKS:
- Free for students eligible for the Educational Benefits Program.
- Login into MyPaymentsPlus
- Review the iPad Student User Agreement.
- Accept or decline the optional Protection Plan by Sept. 18, 2023.
A School-wide Approach to Cell Phones
WHY IT MATTERS: AVHS focuses on Relationships, Engagement, and Collaboration during the school day. Research shows that the mere presence of a cell phone undercuts learning.
HOW IT WORKS: Every student has a school-issued iPad to support their learning.
Cell phones are turned off or on airplane mode and stored out of sight during class time.
Students may use cell phones before and after class, during their lunch periods, and between classes.
Students exchange their cell phones for a pass to leave the classroom during class to prevent usage in hallways and restrooms.
If a student does not have a cell phone, they may exchange their student ID.
PROGRESSION OF CONCERNS:
Formal warning. The teacher notifies the parent/guardian of the concern.
Referral to Student Support Office. The administrator will meet with the student and contact the parent/guardian to establish appropriate consequences.
EXCEPTION: Students who use a personal mobile device to monitor a medical condition (i.e. diabetes, epilepsy) may carry devices with them at all times.
NON-NEGIOTABLES: What We Don’t Do At AVHS, it is never acceptable to...
- send threatening or harassing messages or phone calls.
take photos or videos of others without their permission.
take pictures or videos of fights or dangerous situations.
use your cell phone in locker rooms or restrooms.

Texts are delivered via SchoolMessenger, the mass notification service the district uses for phone calls and email messages. Parents must opt-in to receive text messages. Standard message and data rates may apply.
