October 2023
Spartan Families,
Thank you for all the warm welcomes this school year! My first month here has been a positive experience interacting with students and families. I would like to share some important information along with helpful resources/links within this letter.
Many families of students with asthma and life threatening allergies have sent in physician orders and emergency medications needed at school. If your child requires an inhaler or EpiPen please send in the appropriate form completed by their physician along with their emergency medication. A student may self carry their EpiPen and/or inhaler with physician permission.
Asthma Action Plan Anaphylaxis Emergency Care Plan
Any student who requests Tylenol, Ibuprofen, or TUMs during the school day will need parent permission prior to administration. If appropriate for your child, an Over the Counter Permission form can be completed and returned to school. This form will allow the school nurse to administer over the counter medications without calling or notifying a parent/guardian.
Sign ups have begun for a free Flu clinic for students and faculty on Oct 11, 2023 from 8:00 am to 10:00 am. Please see this letter from the Department of Health.
The Rhode Island Department of Health also runs a Vaccinate Before You Graduate program. VBYG is an adolescent immunization catch-up program, designed to ensure that Rhode Island public and private school students are fully immunized against vaccine-preventable diseases. The program offers convenient, no cost vaccines to middle and high school students across all cities and towns. Here is a reference of grade level immunization requirements. More information to come regarding VBYG.
Included in this reference are the Physical Exam requirements. Annual Physical Exams are due for all new students and students entering 7th and 12th grade per RI Rules and Regulations. If your child is in 7th or 12th grade and a copy of their physical exam has not been submitted, please provide a copy. This can be faxed to the high school at 401-647-4126 or middle school 401-647-4104. Families will soon be contacted if a required physical exam is missing.
Stay healthy and please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you,
Sarah Makowski RN

Flu Clinic at SHS - Oct 11th
Please see the message below from the Rhode Island Department of Health.
Dear Parent/Guardian,
Has everyone in your family had their flu vaccine?
There will be a FREE flu vaccine clinic at Scituate Middle and High School on 10/11/2023 from 8:00 am to 10:00 am. Students and Staff/Faculty are welcome. This clinic is not open to the public.
Here’s some important information about the FREE flu vaccine clinic:
• Register online at schoolflu.com to schedule an appointment.
Enter Login ID to register: scituate
• Online registration is required to ensure the availability of the vaccine.
• Insurance information will be collected, but the vaccine is FREE whether you have insurance or not.
The flu is a serious, highly contagious, and sometimes deadly disease. Catching the flu means missing days of work and school. You might even have to spend time in the hospital. Don’t take the risk — the flu vaccine is your best protection against the flu.
For more information, visit health.ri.gov/flu/, or call the Department of Health’s information line at 401-222-5960.
Thank you.
