Principal’s Message

4/14/21

Hello Wood Community,

The fourth and final quarter of this school year begins on Monday! The end of the year will be here before we know it. Help us keep your kids engaged by checking in on their attendance in both CDL and Hybrid as well as ensuring that they get to school on the appropriate days if you have chosen in-person learning in the hybrid model. We appreciate your support in helping your student be successful! Below is the latest and most updated school information.

Sincerely,

Mike Strande

Principal

CDL Student Supply Pick Up - Friday, April 16th 1:00-4:00 (Yearlong CDL)

This is only for 7th and 8th grade students who are staying in CDL (comprehensive distance learning) and not attending in-person. Please pick up items from the west entrance of the building.

End of Quarter 3

This Friday, April 16th, is the end of the 3rd Quarter for all middle schools. Please check in with your student to make sure they’re finishing the term strong!

Cell Phone Policy - “Off & Away for the Day” (Hybrid)

Please help your student develop healthy and constructive digital tech habits while staying focused on school by reinforcing our school cell phone policy. Students can keep their phones in their backpacks while at school. If you need to communicate with your child during the day, please contact the office, email your student, or email their teacher.

Hybrid Attendance (Hybrid/CDL)

We appreciate the consistency that many students in our Hybrid format are showing in maintaining the schedule that they chose to participate in. If your student is in hybrid please remember that they should be showing up to school on every one of their in-person days (unless they are sick) and at home accessing learning via Zoom during the other days. If the decision was made for your student to participate in Hybrid, then the expectation is that they should be showing up to school on every one of their in-person days barring an illness. Hybrid is not meant to provide flexibility for students to pick and choose which days they feel like attending in-person and which days they’d rather stay home.

6th Grade Outdoor School to Take Place May 17-20 (CDL/Hybrid/WKOP)

Hosted by CREST, all West Linn-Wilsonville 6th grade students will participate in Outdoor School at the same time this year through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous Outdoor School activities. Outdoor School will include all students in Hybrid, CDL, and the Online Program.

Each day, students will engage in lessons and activities that highlight four themes: Water, Earth, Plants, and Animals. Students will receive an Outdoor School Materials Kit from CREST, providing them with the tools they need for an exciting and hands-on experience either at school or at home. Outdoor School activities and special presenters will occur during both synchronous and asynchronous learning days. Local organizations and guest presenters include the Oregon Zoo, OMSI, Portland Audubon, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Clackamas River Basin Council, Friends of the Refuge.

A Parent Information Session will be hosted prior to Outdoor School. More information will be shared.

Attendance (Hybrid/CDL)

If your student will be absent from school, please call the attendance line at 503-673-7502 and let us know and please specify if the absence is for a specific period or for all day.

If a student needs to leave during class they should have a note from their parents. They should then show their teacher the note and sign out at the office. Parents/Guardians should not enter the school to pick up their student. Instead, please call the office at 503-673-7500 and let us know you are in the parking lot waiting for your student.

Starting the week of April 5, we are changing how attendance is taken for students in Hybrid/Comprehensive Distance Learning. The change will allow us to better account for students who are in school every day for safety purposes.

The most important thing for families to remember is for parents to report student absences ahead of time when possible either through ParentVue or by contacting the school office.

Starting the week of April 5, attendance phone calls will be made in the following circumstances:

  1. An attendance call (plus email and perhaps text message) will be placed in the morning when a student whose cohort group was at school for in-person learning is unexpectedly absent. For example, a student who is participating in hybrid learning in Cohort 'A', who is not at school in person an 'A' Day, and who was not previously excused through the school office, would be marked absent and would receive a morning phone call in this circumstance.
  2. An attendance call (plus email and perhaps text message) will be placed in the afternoon when a student whose cohort is NOT expected in school has not yet been present for CDL learning.

Attendance notifications will not change for students who are in the WLWV K12 Online Program. Thank you for your help in attendance reporting.

Track & Field Club (Hybrid/WKOP)

We are excited to offer a Track & Field experience for students this Spring. Track & Field Club will begin the week of April 19th and run for 5 weeks. Practices will be held at Wood and will run from 3:15pm-4:15pm on designated days (Mon/Wed group and a Tues/Thurs group). There will be a $25 fee to participate in Track & Field Club. We want all interested students to be able to participate so if this fee would make that challenging for your family, there are full scholarships available so please contact the front office at 503-673-7500.

covid-19 testing in wlwv schools

In the coming weeks, West Linn-Wilsonville schools will begin offering COVID-19 rapid testing in extra care rooms. Rapid Testing for COVID-19 will only take place if a student is exhibiting symptoms and only with parent-guardian permission. If it is recommended a student take a rapid COVID-19 test at school, a parent-guardian will be contacted to discuss important details and gain permission. A consent form will need to be signed when the parent-guardian comes to pick up the student. Testing will be conducted by trained district nurses or health assistants. Student/family privacy will be prioritized during the testing process.

WLWV Covid-19 District Dashboard

To ensure our community is provided with the most recent and accurate information, our school district has created a COVID-19 Dashboard to be update weekly. The COVID-19 Dashboard reflects all cases connected to West Linn-Wilsonville Schools as of February 24, when Hybrid Learning began.

In accordance with public health, our schools work diligently to ensure that proper guidelines are followed to isolate the student/staff diagnosed with COVID-19, identify close contacts, and disinfect areas of the school when notified of a positive case. If you have been identified as a close contact as a result of exposure in our buildings, you will receive a personal and confidential notification, along with additional guidance.
