The SoRoCo Weekly Newsletter
September 25, 2016
Dear Team,
We could not be more grateful for the hard work and long hours each of you are putting in day in and day out. These first five weeks have been incredibly smooth, which is an attribute not only to how hard you are working, but also to how much you care about your students.
So far, we have not had many discipline referrals, indicating thoughtfully prepared learning activities which engage our students, complimented with a desire to get to know each of them on an individual basis.
This upcoming Homecoming week is a terrific opportunity to show our students that teachers indeed have school spirit, too, beginning tomorrow with 'Merica day! So wear your red, white, and blue, and be proud to be an American... and a Soroco Ram.
~ The Admin Team
We are searching for 7th - 12th graders willing to advocate for our school and use technology to advance the educational experience of our students.
What: Three-Day Certified Student Advocate Program
When: November 9-11, 2016 at the Northwest BOCES Center in Steamboat
Who: One student will be selected from each grade level 7th - 12th
For three days in November, if selected, you will meet in Steamboat with like-minded students from around the area. The first day, you will learn about what it means to be an advocate. The second day, administrators of Soroco will present a problem we think you might be able to help us solve, through the use and innovation of modern technology. The third day, you will present your solution.
Applications close on Friday, so if you are interested, don't wait! Click the button below.
At Soroco, we strive to live out our district’s values every day. We would like to recognize individuals who display our core values, which drive our success.
Accountable: This goes to high school custodian, John Taing. We realized Thursday night that we needed to set up 10 tables and 50 chairs in the Commons for Friday morning's district-wide PLC. Last minite, we asked John, and he said he would take care of it. The room looked great. Thanks, John.
Motivated: This goes to our four cross country runners, who each set a personal record yesterday in the meet in Fruita - Chloe Veilleux, Kourtney Bruner, Brad Veilleux, and Josh Taing.
Safe: This goes to Angel Clark for all the work she does making sure her students are taken care of both physically and emotionally.

Soroco Coaches Transform Our Students' Lives
This week we highlight HS Volleyball Coach, Jeannie Jo Logan.
LOL ~ These guys are more entertained by reading the newspaper than watching the opposing volleyball team serve.
But when we serve, it's a whole different story.

High School Student of the Week - Mitchel Viveiros
Mitchel was nominated this week by his science teacher, Ms. Peasley, who says, "Mitchel has been here every day this year and is doing great in all his classes. He is always really jolly as well." I have to agree with Ms. Peasley. We are incredibly proud of Mitchel for not only coming to school all day every day, but also for getting nothing but A's and B's in his classes. Keep up the good work, sir.
Grade: 10
Favorite Subject: Science, because ever since I was young, it's been fascinating.
Favorite Hobby: Video Games
Favorite Movie: Lord of the Rings
Favorite Book: The Wickit Chronicles
Favorite Food: Sloppy Joe's
Best Part About Soroco: The people - they're all nice and work as a community.
Middle School Student of the Week - Katie Horn
Katie has been a tremendous addition to our school. Coming in as a 6th grader, not only is Katie off to a good start with A's in all her classes, but what says more about her character is how she goes out of her way to show kindness to her peers. I have seen her stop what she is doing to go console a classmate. Katie is very supportive, and people like her make a positive impact on our school culture.
Grade: 6
Favorite Subject: Reading, because I like to read.
Favorite Hobby: Running
Favorite Book: Serafina and the Black Cloak
Favorite Movie: The Divergent Series
Favorite Food: Rotel Chicken
Best Part About Soroco: I like the lockers. They're way better than cubbies.

A Helpful Pair of Twins
Hunter always asks if there is anything he can do to help. When he is not assisting Coach Dudas on the football sideline, he is volunteering to work the clock at volleyball games. You can see him in the picture above, picking up the yard markers after a football game without even being asked, despite the sprinklers being turned on!
Cody has proven himself to be quite the competent scoreboard operator for football games. For anyone who hasn't tried it - keeping an accurate clock is not an easy task. Cody keeps the time as well as the downs and yards to go all by himself. Very impressive!
Thank you, gentlemen!
A Message from the Athletic Director
Thank you to everyone who helped tear down the gym after the middle school volleyball match this week. George and I were working late in his office, and when I went to break down the net and put away the chairs, everything had already been done. Thank you so much! It is a pleasure to work in a community of such caring and hard-working people.
Regarding the fine points of our weekly athletic and co-curricular eligibility system, it is important that students, parents, and teachers are all on the same page.
Teachers are expected to post at least two new grades for each student every week by Sunday night. That way, when I run the warning check on Monday, it is an accurate and true reflection of our students' grades. The Monday sweep makes students aware of what they need to do and provides coaches the opportunity to encourage their players to turn in any missing work, as long as teachers accept it.
The official eligibility check is Tuesday morning at 9:00. Any student who has an F is ineligible for a week. Students have until 9:00 am on Tuesday to turn in any missing assignments (to teachers who accept late work). If students turn their work in at 9:01, then it will only apply for the following week's eligibility check.
Teachers have the option to accept work handed in Tuesday morning before 9:00. If a teacher is so nice as to grade the late assignment and post it in PowerSchool by 3:00, then I will allow that student to be eligible. However, if the teacher doesn't have enough time to grade the work and/or post it, or if they don't accept late work per their own grading policy, then the student remains ineligible. Ultimately, it's the students' responsibility to turn work in on time and not fail any classes so they can play.
If you have any questions or concerns about this process, please e-mail me or give me a call.
On another note, we have made some adjustments to some of our sports schedules in order to avoid certain conflicts and accommodate people's needs. Everything has been updated on Trumba. Please check Trumba by clicking the button below.
